For residents of the United States, Memorial Day is around the corner. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that celebrates the military who have passed away while serving on duty. This holiday falls on Monday, May 25th, this year.
Despite being a Federal holiday, not everyone will be off from work. For those who like to invest and trade in stocks, there’s an important question. Will the stock market be closed on Memorial Day or will it still be open for trading?
Will the Stock Market Be Open and Available for Trading on Memorial Day?
Unfortunately, the primary stock markets that most traders use, such as Nasdaq, Dow Jones, and NYSE, will be closed during Memorial Day. Traders will have to hold off their trading on Tuesday since the holiday always falls on a Monday. Additionally, bond trading won’t be available since the U.S. market will be closed. Commodities and currency exchange will also be closed during this holiday as well.
What Days are the Stock Market Closed?
Every year, there are a handful of holidays that cause the stock market to close. The holidays include: Christmas, Labor Day, President’s Day, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Independence Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Good Friday, and Memorial Day. Also sometimes, these holidays can cause the stock market to close earlier on additional days. For instance, the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas eve can cause the stock market to close 1:00 p.m. ET.
What are the Normal Operating Hours of the Stock Market?
Normally for major stock market exchanges like Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange, the hours of operation are between Monday through Friday when 9:30 a.m. to 4.p.m Eastern Standard Time. Traders can trade after hours and premarket on the weekdays when the stock market is open to the public. However, that is not allowed on holidays during times when the stock market is closed.
Is the CNBC Show Mad Money Hosted by Jim Cramer Airing on Memorial Day?
No, they won’t air the CNBC show Mad Money. Instead, they’ll be running the wildly popular business startup series Shark Tank as a full day marathon. This runs through the time slot that would’ve normally aired at 6 p.m.
