Is the Fortnite OG map back? Reload mode explained (2024)

It was a season that took players back to the very beginnings of Fortnite - its very first map, from the game's launch in 2017.

It was one of the most popular events in the game's history, so the craving for its return made perfect sense.

Epic itself said, soon after the event, that the season exceeded its expectations, and that it would come back sometime in 2024. Check out the post on X below:

So, now that we're almost halfway through 2024, has the beloved OG map returned to Fortnite? Or has there been any news on that front at all?

Many of you have no doubt heard of Reload mode, a new feature to Fortnite that launched this month. On the surface, it certainly seems like a return to the OG map. Both its locations and weapons evoke the game of 2017.

But it's not quite the same. Let's take a closer look at Reload mode, and see how it compares to last year's OG season.

Is the Fortnite OG map back?

Fortnite OG is the very first map that launched with the game, way back in 2017. It must have a special place in many fans' hearts, if the huge surge in players last year is anything to go by.

So, Epic would be daft not to bring it back in 2024, right?

Well, old school Fortnite fans are in luck, because the OG map is back... sort of.

Fortnite Reload contains classic locations and classic weapons, but it's not just a season on the Battle Royale mode. It's an entirely new mode in itself.

It consist of 40 players on a far smaller version of the Fortnite OG map. You can either play with Battle Royale settings, or Zero Build if you just want to shoot and loot. We've spoken more about the Forntite Reload mode in our explainer.

All that said, will the OG map return to the Battle Royale mode properly? Like it did last year?

Could the Fortnite OG map come back in a bigger way?

All we can say in this front is, don't get your hopes up. Epic said that the OG map would return in 2024, and technically it has via the Reload Mode.
