How do i stop my iphone from automatically finishing words when i type? It does it while I’m typing and causes a bunch of typos that I then have to go back and fix. It’s maddening.
For example I’ll be typing “so how much paper do you think..” and it turns it into “so how w much ch paper er do you u think..”
iPhone SE, iOS 17

It’s not the autocorrect that’s the problem. It doesn’t wait until we are done typing a word. It FINISHES the word while we are still typing, causing the stutter in the text because we don’t know it’s about to finish the word for us so we continue to type the word. It’s like someone reaching over your shoulder to hit a letter on your keyboard while you are in the middle of a word. It’s not helpful in any way.
and its not predictive text above the keyboard that’s the problem. That just gives the option of selecting the word if you don’t want to type it out. But this problem is it finishes it for you automatically. How do we turn that off? I don’t like stuttering while I type.

I like that it suggests words on the keyboard, I just want it to stop typing them for me. Is there a way to do that without removing predictive text altogether?

go in settings, search ‘extended predictions’ and toggle it off. You still have predictions above the keyboard but it doesn’t automatically replace the words like autocorrect:)

I FOUND A SOLUTION
Go to the Settings >> General >> Keyboard. Then turn ON predictive text, then scroll down and turn OFF "Show Predictions Inline". I had the same exact problem as you but this fixes everything, you still have the suggestion words but it doesn't finish words for you🥹

I noticed this issue as soon as I did one of the most recent updates for IOS. The only way I have been able to remedy this is to turn off the predictive text. While it is lovely that it gives the suggested word list - the **** autofinish is annoying as all get out because as most have said - it causes a stutter. Unfortunately there is no fix for just the auto-finish without shutting off predictive all together. Hopefully this will be some Apple can remedy with the next software update.

It is the “Inline Text Prediction”.
Use predictive text on iPhone - Apple Support
There is no separate setting to turn just it off right now (iOS 17.0.3) and no idea on if that is something that will come later. It is turned off when you turn off predictive text. Otherwise, you reject the prediction if you keep typing (problematic if you wanted a shorten version of the word but clicking the space bar accepts the inline prediction UNLESS you add them in Text Replacement in settings.
Have a word or phrase you use and don’t want it corrected?
- Go to Settings> General> Keyboard, then tap Text Replacement.
- Tapat the top right, then enter your word or phrase in the Phrase field, but leave the Shortcut field blank.
That might be a helpful workaround for some

I am struggling with this same thing. I don’t have auto-correct on. I like the text predictions, but this new thing where it finishes words for me is driving me insane. I’ll type “ok perf” and it’ll send “ok perfect.” Obviously not the worst thing that could happen, but I have auto-correct off for a reason. I don’t want to turn off text predictions because they’re really handy, but I will if it’s going to keep typing for me.

So there's no way around this? I want the predictive words that show up above the keyboard though.

Yes but most of us still want predictive text above the keyboard, just dont want it auto-finishing words. Like someone else said, this is why i have auto correct OFF.

That is frustrating because I do like the three suggestions that come up while I am typing but I hate the inline predictions. Thank you for clarifying!! This explains a lot.

So it actually is a new feature for the predictive text? That’s frustrating. Well, I’m turning off predictive text then. Like you, the suggested text is nice but the frustration of the auto finish cancels out that convenience.
