NYU Langone’s Institute for Excellence in Health Equity is guided by four core pillars to help us accomplish our mission: research, medical education, clinical care, and community engagement.
Research
Our institute strives to impact national policy on health equity by focusing on innovative and multi-centered peer-reviewed grants. The central goal of our research is to enhance knowledge that promotes evidence-based solutions that transform health equity and will shape national health policy and clinical practice. Through establishing a hub and spoke research model, creating a scientist pipeline program, improving the knowledge and skills of tenure-track faculty who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM), and developing mentored research projects, our institute provides excellence in health equity research.

Medical Education
Our medical education pillar advances undergraduate and graduate medical education training by ensuring that students and residents recognize and integrate issues related to health equity into their practice. Through mentorship, we facilitate successful academic careers for trainees and faculty who are URiM. The institute collaborates with the Office of Medical Education, Office of Diversity Affairs, Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, and Office of Graduate Medical Education to advance medical education, faculty development, and mentorship in health equity research and to advance the career of faculty and trainees who are URiM.

Clinical Care
In collaboration with department chairs and Medical Center Information Technology (MCIT), our institute is adapting NYU Langone’s delivery systems to improve health equity outcomes, including developing dashboards that collect and analyze data with the goal to reduce disparities. This goal will be achieved through tailoring quality and safety performance improvement program targets, establishing dashboard filters, creating ambulatory interventions, and enhancing electronic medical systems.

Community Engagement
Our community engagement pillar advances health equity by implementing scalable solutions that alleviate health disparities in the community and across the nation. The foundation of this pillar is community-based translational research grants funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. The pillar is also building upon existing NYU Langone community-based programs, such as the New York City Department of Health Barbershop Hypertension Program, and synergizing the work of the community engagement cores of Perlmutter Cancer Center and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
