What is an instant transfer?

Instant transfers are e-transfers that complete in real-time. You can make instant transfers any day of the year, at any time of day. It’s getting easier to transfer cash, too – thanks to banking apps and e-wallets popping up all around.

Traditionally, people used to go directly to their banks and request transfers. Now, however, it’s far quicker – and just as secure – to transfer money with a smartphone, PC, or tablet. You just need to make sure you’re using a legitimate program.

What is verification?

Verification is often a matter of security and legitimacy. The bank sending your money (or is sending it to you on someone else’s behalf) needs proof that you are indeed who you say you are. This often means they require evidence of your identity with evidence such as a valid passport, a bill in your name, and/or even your address history.

Banks may ask for this information when you open your account and – once active – will set up a verification process. Nowadays, this process usually arises in the form of a verification code sent to your phone or that you must memorize, which you will need to provide when making a bank transfer.

It is important to note that this verification process is there to protect you. As annoying as it may be, it ensures that no one else can send or use your money on your behalf or without your approval first. This process is often referred to as multi-step verification – you may have experienced it when trying to log into social media and email accounts, too.

However annoying it may be to go through verification, especially if you do not have time or cannot remember the necessary numbers, it is worth following security checks to ensure your account – and money – don’t fall into the wrong hands.

Do I need to be verified to send instant payments?

No, you do not necessarily need to be verified every time you make instant payments. Many banking apps and websites will allow you to make transfers so long as you have the other necessary information (i.e. the receiver’s details to send the money via).

However, you may have to be verified at least once during your registration via app or website in question. This is to confirm that you are indeed who you say you are!

Once that initial verification is out of the way, you should be able to send and receive money freely without having to go through the verification process again!

However, a few services will frequently let you make instant transfers without any kind of verification whatsoever.

What about ACH transfers? Do ACH transfers need verification?

ACH transfers (Automated Clearing House) process money between banks for various reasons. You may use an ACH transfer to clear bills, receive payments from your salary, or share money with family members. The key difference between ACH and other transfers is that there’s no need for cards to interact. It’s frequently very affordable to transfer via ACH.

However, instant ACH transactions still need verification. This is largely thanks to anti-fraud measures and to help reduce bounce rates. Verification via ACH will also help to weed out errors that would otherwise slow down transactions.

Verification is also necessary here as instant transactions – which are cheaper to process – are also likely to be very popular. That casts a wide net for fraud cases – meaning if verification didn’t exist at all, many people would face losing money.

ACH transfers generally take a day or two to transfer. They can be impressively efficient – which is another reason why they’re both popular, and why they require verification.

Is it possible to use an instant ACH transfer without verification?

While ACH (by default) will normally need to pass checks, you can still make an instant transfer with routing and account number without verification. This all depends on the bank(s) you use, the amount of money in transit, and how many times your bank will allow you to make such processes.

However, it’s not always safe to transfer via ACH without verification. You’re potentially opening doors to fraud and lowering security around your account. That said, you may be handling a small amount of money and/or a low-pressure account. In which case, you may decide the risks are worth it.

I recommend looking at legitimate ways to transfer money beyond ACH and traditional banking without stepping on any legal toes, or causing yourself any security headaches.

Below, I’ve rounded up some of the best ways to send transfers to and from third parties without having to worry about verifying every time you open up your app.

5 Ways to send instant transfers without verification

The following five options have pros and cons, so review their features in line with your needs before you go ahead and download.

Venmo

Venmo’s quickly become a leading name in instant transferral – and for a good reason. After a few checks at registration, sending instant transfers without verification couldn’t be simpler.

When you want to make a transfer, simply tap or click the “Pay or Request” icon in the Venmo app. You will then need to enter in the receiver’s name, username, number, or email address in the search box.

Once Venmo has found your recipient, you can easily request or send money. Once the payment completes, you must fill out a quick memo detailing the payment – and the transaction’s finished.

You can send money directly from your Venmo balance (which can be added to either by receiving money from others or by uploading it from your own bank account), or your debit or credit card.

Wise

Wise’s super-fast money transfer system is catching up fast with several of the bigger apps in the game. You can use Wise for making domestic ACH transfers or for international transfers.

The international transfer system is fantastic as you can use it to transfer money to yourself – for use when you are traveling or conducting business overseas – or to others. Wise lets you manage multiple different online accounts with digital money in several currencies. You can therefore keep cash in your USD, GBP, EUR, or any other accounts and simply transfer out as and when you want to.

You can sign up to Wise directly, or use a Google or Facebook account to get started.

When you’d like to make a payment, simply enter how much money you want to transfer and confirm where the money is coming from. You, again, simply need to find the recipient with an email address. Keep in mind, however, that fees may apply.

If this interests you, please do read my in-depth review about Wise for much more information.

Zelle

Zelle is another great option for sending verification-free payments as long as you and the recipient are both using bank accounts in the US. You can also only access Zelle via your credit union or bank.

Once your account is set up, you need to add the recipient’s email address or phone number to make a transfer. Then, you will need to enter the amount you are sending, review the transfer details, add a memo to the transfer, and then tap “Confirm”.

PayPal

PayPal works very similarly to Venmo – and it’s one of the biggest names in e-wallet payments the world over. Much like Venmo, you can simply send money to others by finding them in the app, using their name, phone number, or email address.

When you set up a PayPal account, you will need to link it to your bank card. When you want to transfer money, simply find the receiver in the app, then enter the amount you want to send. If you want to add a personal message to the transfer, such as a quick “Thanks” or “This is for…”, you can click on “What’s this payment for?”.

Then, press “Continue” to review payment details, then click on “Send Money Now”. While this is an instant transfer without verification, PayPal reserves the right to restrict and investigate accounts if they suspect foul play.

Cash App

Cash App is another pay-by-phone service that’s grown popular thanks to sheer ease of use. With Cash App, you must create an account and connect it to your bank before adding money.

Press the $ icon on the main screen when you’re ready to transfer money. Then, enter the amount of money you want to send, and tap or press “Pay”. This will take you to a search bar to search for a $Cashtag, email address, or phone number of the receiver. You can add a note to the transfer if you wish or simply press “Pay” to send the transfer directly.

Other Options

While we’re focusing here on instant money transfers, you can also use good old fashioned money orders to send and receive money. Naturally, they’re not as smooth and seamless as the modern digital options. For some example, you might wonder if money orders can bounce? Do check out the article for more helpful tips on when to use a money order and any challenges associated with them.

FAQs

Are instant transfers safe?

As long as you use verified apps (such as PayPal, for example) and are sure that you enter the recipient’s details correctly and the amount, most instant transfers should be completely safe. Only ever use apps or bank services you know and trust.

How much do instant transfers cost?

Ultimately, it varies. Some apps may charge fees depending on how you wish to transfer the money. However, this may differ depending on the app you are using, where you send the money (if it’s an international transfer, for example) – and, of course, the method you wish to use to transfer.
