What is the Indian grading system? ›

Grading System in Indian Schools

The Percentage System works as: Maximum Marks:100, Minimum Marks: 0, Minimum Marks Required for Passing: 35. 100-80% Considered Excellent, 65-79% Considered Very Good, 55–64% considered good, 45–55% considered fair, 41–44% considered Pass, 0-40% considered fail.

A score of 70-100 means that the student is “FirlClass with Distinction”, “60-69.99 means “First Division”, 50-59.99 means that the student is “Second Division”, and 40-49.99 means “Passing Marks”.

The school system in India has four levels: lower primary (age 6 to 10), upper primary (11 and 12), high (13 to 15) and higher secondary (17 and 18). The lower primary school is divided into five “standards”, upper primary school into two, high school into three and higher secondary into two.

To convert the Indian CGPA to a US GPA, the process involves multiplying the CGPA by 9.5 and subtracting 7.5. This will give you the equivalent US GPA on a scale of 4.0.

Generally, at the school level percentages below 65 are below average, percentages of 75-80 are considered average while above 95 is exceptional. At the university level however percentages between 60–79 are considered excellent and are difficult to obtain.

Some institutions use a grade point system with letter grades, which may be associated with a percentage mark. The pass mark for individual subjects can be as low as 33%, though the graduation mark may be higher. First Divisions/Class is usually 60%.

What is a good GPA? A GPA of 3.0 - 3.5 is considered decent at most universities. Top academic institutions typically require GPAs higher than 3.5. With a lower GPA, you can still get admission but may not be eligible for scholarships.

A - is the highest grade you can receive on an assignment, and it's between 90% and 100% B - is still a pretty good grade! This is an above-average score, between 80% and 89% C - this is a grade that rests right in the middle.

Is 80 a fail? ›

Grades below a “C” (80%) are considered a failing grade. Grades of less than a “C” (80%) will be assigned in order to assist in Financial Aid processes, but still considered as failing in the program.

For example, if a student earns 60 out of 100 total marks, then they would have a grade of 60%, which is considered First Class/Division.

Indian universities usually use a 10-point grading scale (though some use a 4-point scale). Your GPA is calculated by dividing the total sum of grades achieved by the number of credits taken. The resulting figure will be a number between 0 and 10.

In most countries, high school consists of grades from 9th to 12th. In India, though, 12th is considered Intermediate or HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate). The HSC examination is conducted by different state boards, such as the Maharashtra Board, the MP Board, West Bengal Board, etc.

CBSE Grading System

They follow the pattern from A to E letter grades. The board introduced it in the year 2009-10. Since then, it has been compiled by all CBSE schools. The a to E grading pattern represents a five-point system, where A denotes the highest grade and E is the lowest.

In India, seventh grade is known as Class 7. Class 7 is the second year in middle school. Pupils aged 12 to 13 attend class 7. Students are introduced to more complex mathematics and science among other subjects.
