Why does the App Store keep asking me to update my payment method? ›

An invalid or expired payment method can prevent Apple from charging automatically. Seeing "Verification Required" prompt and requesting to verify payment information is most likely a sign that there is something wrong with your payment method. Thus, you need to update or change it.

When attempting to make your purchase, especially online or via mobile app, it's easy to incorrectly enter a digit of your credit card number, expiration date or security code. If that's not the issue, maybe your billing address is outdated. These could all be simple explanations for a declined transaction.

Sometimes, if there's been a recent change or update to your payment method, Apple may require verification for security purposes. This can happen even when attempting to download free apps. Ensuring that your payment information is up-to-date and correctly entered in your Apple ID settings might resolve the issue.

You may need to remove and re-add your payment method to make sure you entered the information correctly. If your billing address doesn't match your payment method, the ZIP code is incorrect, or you're trying to use an expired card, you'll see a "Payment Not Completed" error.

Your card may be declined for a number of reasons: the card has expired; you're over your credit limit; the card issuer sees suspicious activity that could be a sign of fraud; or a hotel, rental car company, or other business placed a block (or hold) on your card for its estimated total of your bill.

If you can't remove a payment method

If you have subscriptions like iCloud+, have an unpaid balance, or you use purchase sharing, you must keep at least one payment method on file. Do you have a subscription? You can cancel iCloud+ and cancel other subscriptions from Apple.

If you can't add a payment method

If you're using an accepted payment method but your Apple ID is set to a different country or region, change your country or region. If the Add button is grayed out, you might be in a Family Sharing group and you use purchase sharing.

When a payment fails, it is likely due to filters the bank applies to certain transactions made online, or amount limitations applied to the card. If your payment is being rejected, please reach out to your bank to get additional information.

If you are being asked to pay again, rather than downloading the app from the App Store product page, locate it in your purchase history. You can see your purchase history from inside the App Store. Tap your avatar in the top right corner to see your App Store Account details.
