How, Why, and When Should You Vacuum Under a Bed?

Out of sight, out of mind is easy when it comes to cleaning under furniture. But while the rest of the room looks spotless, do you know what’s lurking underneath your bed?

It may not be the Boogieman but it’s just as harmful and gross, if not more so. Before you push the vacuum cleaner right past your bed next time, stop to consider what you’re leaving behind.

Let’s look at why you should vacuum under a bed, how to do it, and how often you should clean.

Why You Should Vacuum Under a Bed

When was the last time you peeked underneath your bed? You might imagine a desert oasis with a random dust bunny blowing by, but it’s a bit grosser than that.

The space under a bed is the perfect collecting ground for dust, hair, food crumbs (hello midnight snacks!), dead bugs, and other not-so-appealing items. And if left undisturbed, it also becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, dust mites, and different harmful pathogens.

While you sleep, you’re left exposed to that unsanitary air. Breathing it in can make you sick, especially if it’s left to build up over time.

That’s why it’s important to vacuum underneath your bed. Not just to retrieve that long lost sock, but to improve the quality of air in your bedroom.

How to Do It Properly

If it was super easy to vacuum under a bed, we likely wouldn’t be having this conversation. But there are steps you can take to make it less of a chore.

After cleaning out any clothes or items from under the bed, the easiest solution is to buy one of those robot vacuum cleaners. They fit nicely under the bed and can program to clean even without you there.

If not, most newer vacuums come equipped with extension wands, hoses, or collapsible units that reach underneath most bed frames. Ergonomic vacuums and handles will help save your back from strenuous bending.

Does your bedroom have wood floors? Then grab a hair blow dryer and blow those dust bunnies on out of there! Brooms, such as a Swifter, collapse flat to easily reach all nooks and crannies.

Make It Part of Your Routine

The good news? You don’t have to vacuum under a bed every time you vacuum your room, especially if you clean on a weekly basis.

But a good rule of thumb is to vacuum under your bed twice a month. At the very least once a month.

The point is to not give those nasty items time to gather and pollute the air you breathe. So the more you do it, the cleaner your air will be.

Sleep Tight and Stay Healthy

Don’t let dirty air become the new Boogieman underneath your bed. Now that you know the why, how, and when, you can vacuum under a bed for a healthier night’s sleep.
