Have you downloaded The Sims 4 now that it is free to play? Are you a long time Sims 4 player that wants to add some challenge to your game? Or do you simply need a refresher on how to start a new Legacy Challenge save? Well, this guide is for you!
I will walk you through the steps to start a new Legacy Challenge and hopefully making things a bit easier to understand from the rules.
First thing’s first, though. What IS a Legacy Challenge? Well, a Legacy Challenge in The Sims is a 10-generation challenge where you start with a single Sim, very little money, and a dream. You then will play this Sim and their future generations through 10 generations and, at the end, hopefully end up with a wealthy and well-established family in the game. But how do you start this whole thing in the first place? That’s where this guide comes in.
Creating Your Sim
The first thing you will need to do when starting any Legacy Challenge is to create your Sim. You have full control over your first (Founder) Sim in both what they look like and what their aspiration and traits will be. This will be the only time in the challenge that you will have this much freedom in customization, so make use of it!
We recommend that you start your Sim as a Young Adult. Aside from that, the choice is yours in what they look like and how they will behave.
At this stage of the game, you should also decide on what your family’s succession laws will be. Choose ONE from each category from this list.
When we initially started this challenge we had rules in place that required you to start your Sim on a 50 x 50 or larger lot and then purchase a very expensive item both to bring your money down and to increase your taxes. Taxes in The Sims 4 are now much larger and therefore both the lot size and the item purchase requirement have been removed. Feel free to start your Sim in any neighborhood on any sized lot (though bear in mind that smaller lots will have less room for expansion over the generations).
Setting Your Sim’s Money to §1800
Once your Sim is moved in, use the money cheat (shown below) by typing CTRL+SHIFT+C to cheat your Sim’s starting funds to §1800 (or less if you are doing an Extreme or Ultra Extreme start, but I will be covering that in another guide!). This is the starting money that you will have to get the necessary items that your Sim needs for survival.
If you aren’t sure what items to buy, you can always download our “Legacy Lawn Living” lot on the gallery. It has everything that you need to get started!
To access this lot in the in-game gallery click the gallery icon in the upper right-hand corner. Then search for user: Pinstar1161 and look for the Legacy-Lawn Living lot shown below.
After that all you have to do is download the lot and place it!
A tip that I recently discovered for this challenge is that if you are like me and constantly forgetting which Succession Laws you chose, make sure to list them in the “Family Notes” section of the game in neighborhood view. That way you will be reminded of what they are every time you start up your save file!
Once this is all done, you can get your Sim a job and start scrounging for simoleons. It’s up to you! Make sure to also read the Gameplay Rules section for an in-depth look at all of the rules. Just remember the basics though: No cheats/hacks that make your gameplay easier!

The best thing to do when starting your Legacy Challenge is to begin a new game. Do this by selecting the + at the top of the main menu and selecting New Game. This will bring you to Create a Sim (CAS). Your challenge begins in Create-A-Sim (CAS).
Any Sim that joins the family must either be a randomly generated townie or a child that is either born or adopted into the family. When children are born or adopted into the family, their traits and aspirations must be randomly generated. You can use The Legacy Challenge's very own Random Trait Generator.
A legacy challenge is a challenge created by Pinstar that challenges a player to play a family through 10 generations. The player starts with one adult Sim by themselves in what is known as a "legacy lot" (a lot, usually 50x50 or 60x50, with only the bare necessities for the Sim).
Getting your founder a job on day 1 is pretty much a given, but your choice of early careers can make your early game a breeze, or a headache. Scan through all the careers. Look at their starting salaries. The highest is tech guru at $31/hour the lowest is criminal at a palty $7/hour.
This is the starting money that you will have to get the necessary items that your Sim needs for survival. Type this code in the cheat window first. This is the cheat needed to get your Sim's starting cash to §1800. Make sure to turn off testingcheats when you are done!
Each heir has a different way of making money for this legacy challenge. Your Sim may sell their creations using the inventory, market tables, or on plopsy. At the start of the generation, your Sim must start with zero simoleons, following a rags-to-riches style.
Enter the change traits Sims 4 cheat “cas.fulleditmode” in the cheat box and press enter.Press “Shift” on the keyboard and click on any sim to change the traits. From the available options, click on Modify in CAS.
Spouses. Spouses may not bring in any money with them when they move in/marry into the family. To prevent this, you may merge townies into families with one another prior to moving them in. A Sim who is not the last member of their household will not bring any money into the household.
It's called the Alphabet Legacy and is achieved once players hit the 26th generation. This is something that would require quite the processing power, unless players use some of The Sims 4's mods to clean up their ghosts and help their hardware out.
After establishing the theme for the challenge, lay down the law with a founder Sim. The founder desires to set their family up for success and pass on their ideals for generations to come. Players must choose an heir for the generation, which will be the Sim they follow to continue the bloodline.
As of the latest rule change, you can bring in more than one spouse). You may have non-heir family members leave the Legacy Family, but once they are gone, they may not be moved back in. The Legacy Family must remain on the same lot for the duration of the challenge (this does not include vacations).
Click on them and select 'Challenge with Lightsaber' from the social interaction menu - if your Sim has a Lightsaber Challenge active in their Batuu missions panel, a small icon next to the interaction prompt will let you know that this is the way to complete the challenge task.
You can get the sugar skulls without cheats on PS4. First, you must have an urn or tombstone from a dead sim on your property.Interact with it and select "Leave Sugarskull offering". If you're lucky, a Day of the Dead celebrator will appear in the neighborhood, you'll get a notification saying this has happened.
