Learning to love life, to let go, and harness your energy to positively deal with stress can be difficult. This is true even when you’re not dealing with intense mental health issues.

Learning how to engage with joy and find happiness again is not impossible. In fact, it’s right at your fingertips.

This list of tips can help you start finding joy in your life again, so you can start enjoying and loving life again.

Understanding Fear and How It Eats at You

So many anxieties, mood swings, bursts of anger, procrastination, depression, and other extremely negative emotions really stem from fear. Fear of the future, fear of the past, fear of being vulnerable, fear of change, fear of being hurt, fear of self-reflection, fear that stems from trauma, fear of personal faith, and even fear of success.

The first step to reclaiming your life is acknowledging this fear and forgiving yourself for it. Fear is an important survival mechanism. But when it’s allowed to spiral out of control, it can be very damaging.

Take a moment right now and tell yourself, “I love you.”

Now, let us begin.

Evaluate and Understand What You’re Lacking and Give That to the World

Look into yourself. Do a meditative exercise or start writing a list of things you want emotionally and physically.

If you need more attention from others, start giving it instead: be kinder to others and offer your genuine self. When these acts are done without self-interest but with pure intentions, you’ll find your mindset, and thus your world, changing around you to match your expectations.

Allow Peace and Stillness to Make a Home in Your Life

Start by cleaning up your room and your desk, or wherever you can focus your mind. Light some incense, play low calming music, and take a moment to lay or sit with yourself. No phone, no TV, nothing to “keep your mind busy.” Be in silence within yourself.

Thoughts will come up and really examine them. Try to separate yourself from your thoughts and emotions and ask where these feelings and ideas are coming from. Choose to say positive things to yourself and live in the moment to bring clarity and perspective to your daily life.

Take Time to Appreciate What’s Been Done, Not Just What Must Be Done

When you take this time for stillness, whether you do it inside or outside, acknowledge everything you have done. Think about that movie you like, the day with your friends that brought you joy, or the simple budding flower you saw by the sidewalk this morning.

Instead of staying held in your anxiety, appreciate the joyful moments as they come. This will ground you and make it easier for you to let go of emotions that aren’t serving you anymore and keep a truly realistic perspective on your life.

Foster Your Joy for Life

It can be difficult to look around and find things that bring you happiness, especially when your mind is hyper-focused on negativity or when you’re dealing with anxiety and depression.

By slowing yourself down and making yourself take time to appreciate the things around you—and to acknowledge them with thanks and gratitude when you do—you can begin fostering more joy in your life.
