Known as a solid-state drive, an SSD is a relatively new form of storage that is used in computers. In comparison to a hard disk drive (HDD), SSDs are a more efficient and convenient way to store digital data, utilizing flash-based memory.
Particularly, HDDs make use of mechanical platters that spin, with a moving read/write head for accessing data. Meanwhile, SSDs only use a digital memory chip in order to access data.
This makes SSDs silent, fast, and reliable. Newer laptops, already-built PCs, and even gaming consoles (such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X) now come with SSDs integrated within them.
There are two types of SSDs that are on the market, these are:
- SATA SSDs – the traditional form of SSDs, SATA SSDs are typically fitted where they would house HDDs
- NVMe M.2 PCIe SSDs – a newer form of SSDs (and the fastest), these are mounted inside the PC itself
