Is 3 days in Stockholm enough? ›

Three days is a perfect amount of time to visit the Swedish capital, because it gives you a chance to explore the center and its closest islands as well as taking a day trip somewhere further out. Our 3-day Stockholm itinerary takes in: Gamla Stan. The Royal Palace.

The best way to get around Stockholm is by the excellent public transportation system; several bus lines, metro, commuter rails, trams and ferries cover the big city very efficiently. Biking is another popular option for getting around, as the city boasts numerous bike lanes and paths.

Three days in Stockholm are ideal, giving you enough time to stroll in the old city alleys, visit a few of the city's top museums, and explore a bit of Stockholm's archipelago. If you can only spend 2 days in Stockholm, you'll need to either give up on museums or do without the archipelago cruise.

I would recommend at least three whole days (obviously depending on how long you are staying in Scandinavia!) The good thing about Stockholm is that most attractions and museums are located quite close to each other and that you can go pretty much anywhere by foot.

You can visit Stockholm year round, just be prepared to wrap up in winter, when temps drop to -3°C. Come in Dec for atmospheric Christmas markets and twinkling lights. If you want to enjoy the countryside on the doorstep, the best time to visit Stockholm is May-Sept.

Most people choose to visit Stockholm in June, July and August when the weather is at its best. The summer may be short, but the days are long and the city has a celebratory air, particularly after Midsummer, with verdant parks, urban beaches and island excursions to enjoy.

Don't bring a ton of cash

So on your trip, it's best to bring your bank card and only use cash if you have to.

North East of Gamla Stan, therefore slightly east of centre, Östermalm is the most elegant and exclusive part of Stockholm.

Stockholm is a very walkable city which is one of the reasons why we loved it so much. We were able to walk to almost all of the tourist attractions and areas of the city that we wanted to visit. If you are not an avid walker (or New Yorkers like us haha) Stockholm has an amazing metro system called T-Bana.

In terms of costs, Stockholm is slightly more expensive than the UK for some things but lots of things in Stockholm are free! These include entry to the Swedish Parliament, Art on the Underground and some, but not all, of the Museums.

Is Copenhagen or Stockholm better? ›

For history buffs and nature lovers, we would choose Stockholm over Copenhagen. But for design enthusiasts, foodies, beer lovers and nightlife partiers, we recommend Copenhagen over Stockholm.

For budget travelers, it's reasonable to expect to spend around $80 to $100 per day in Sweden, including accommodation, transportation, meals, and some activities. On the other hand, mid-range travelers can expect to spend approximately $150 to $200 per day.

If you plan to do most of your exploring in the city center it's unlikely you'll need a car while you're in Stockholm. Everything is easily accessible on foot or via public transport, and there are very limited car parking spaces.
