Real-world maths
Companies have to budget for increased costs as prices rise. Being able to work out and predict future costs using percentage increase calculations can help a company to plan successfully.
For example, a production company predicts a 12% increase in costs. The budget for the costs was originally £24,500. However, with the expected increase the new costs will be £27,440. (24,500 × 1∙12). The business will have to plan their budget to meet these increased costs.

If the amount increases then we use the formula: (new value−original value)original value×100= Percentage increase. (new value − original value) original value × 100 = Percentage increase .
If the amount increases then we use the formula: (new value−original value)original value×100= Percentage increase. (new value − original value) original value × 100 = Percentage increase .
The percentage can be found by dividing the value by the total value and then multiplying the result by 100. The formula used to calculate the percentage is: (value/total value)×100%.
For example, the salary of a person increases from $700 to $1050 after a year. Here, the initial value = 700, the final value = 1050. Substituting the values in the formula, Percentage Increase = [(1050 - 700)/700] × 100 = (350/700) × 100 = 50%. Therefore, the percentage increase in the salary of the person is 50%.
15% of 100 is 15. To find this answer, we first must find the value of 1% of 100. To find the value of 1% of any starting number, we divide it by 100. This is because a percentage is a fraction with an unseen denominator of 100.
It is calculated by subtracting the original number from the new number, dividing the result by the original number, and then multiplying it by 100. The formula for calculating a percentage increase is: (New Number - Original Number) / Original Number x 100.
To calculate a 5% pay raise, you only have to multiply the percentage of the increase (in decimals) by your current salary and add your current salary. So, assuming your monthly salary is $1,000, a 5% increase will be 0.05 multiplied by $1,000 plus the current salary, resulting in $1,050.
