A tutorial on how you can create and use your Coinbase Pro API Keys with Crypto Pro.
Creating API Keys can be frustrating sometimes. Especially when the exchange uses confusing words such as API Key, API Key Secret, API Private Key, and API Passphrase. Are they all the same? Which ones do I need to use? How do I generate and Link them? What does this even mean? Where am I? Who am I?
If you are having any of these questions then you’ve come to the right place! We will be addressing everything you need to know about Coinbase Pro’s API function. We will even show you an example with pictures, so all you have to do is follow along 3 simple steps.
About Coinbase Pro
Coinbase Pro was announced in May of 2018. It differentiates itself for the regular Coinbase platform in several key areas. Coinbase has a simple and friendly user interface targeted at casual investors who want to buy the biggest and most popular cryptocurrencies out there.
In contrast, Coinbase Pro offers a wider range of cryptocurrencies to purchase, a more complicated user interface with functions such as candlestick charts, market feed data, and other advanced trading features.
What Are API Keys?
According to Google’s dictionary, an API is: “a set of functions and procedures allowing the creation of applications that access the features or data of an operating system, application, or other services.”
An API Key can be considered as a username that isgenerating to allow access to data. In this example, the Coinbase Pro API is generated by theexchange and you then pass it on to another application. The application willthen import your data based on the permissions you allow for.
An API Secret, also referred to as API Private Key is simply apassword used in combination with an API Key.
You can think of the API Passphrase as a second password you need to enter to establish a connection between the two applications. Coinbase Pro implements this as an extra measure of authentication.
Why Do I Need to Link My Keys?

When you first buy cryptocurrency, you are issued two keys: a public key, which works like an email address (meaning you can safely share it with others, allowing you to send or receive funds), and a private key, which is typically a string of letters and numbers (and which is not to be shared with anyone).
Store API keys or signing secrets in files outside of your application's source tree. If you store API keys or any other private information in files, keep the files outside your application's source tree to keep your keys out of your source code control system.
An application programming interface (API) key is a code used to identify and authenticate an application or user. API keys are available through platforms, such as a white-labeled internal marketplace. They also act as a unique identifier and provide a secret token for authentication purposes.
API Keys is currently free of charge. If you are using Cloud Endpoints to manage your API, you might incur charges at high traffic volumes. See the Endpoints pricing and quotas page for more information.
The biggest difference between the two platforms is their user interface. Coinbase offers a clean, simple way to buy and sell cryptocurrency with only a few options for placing orders. Coinbase Pro, on the other hand, gives users advanced charting and trading options, giving superior control for advanced traders.
To authenticate API requests, you can use basic authentication with your email address and password, your email address and an API token, or an OAuth access token. All methods of authentication set the authorization header differently. Credentials sent in the payload or URL are not processed.
Use JSON web tokens. JSON web tokens (JWTs) are often used to implement key-based client authentication. The client generates a JWT and signs it with a private key. The API then validates the JWT with the client's public key and uses the embedded claims to make an authorization decision.
OAuth is the answer to accessing user data with APIs. Unlike with API keys, OAuth does not require a user to go spelunking through a developer portal. In fact, in the best cases, users simply click a button to allow an application to access their accounts.

For context, API key security should ideally be viewed as part of application security and data security. The API, after all, is the gateway to an application. If the API key is stolen, there will be very deficient application and data security.
API keys are generally not considered secure; they are typically accessible to clients, making it easy for someone to steal an API key. Once the key is stolen, it has no expiration, so it may be used indefinitely, unless the project owner revokes or regenerates the key.
API keys can't authenticate the individual user making the request, only the project or application sending the request. API keys are like passwords — only effective if the owner stores them securely.
A public sandbox is available for testing API connectivity and web trading. The sandbox hosts a subset of the production order books and supports all exchange functionality except Transfers. You can add unlimited fake funds for testing. info.
