How to Detect Scammer
Hey
I was checking for jobs, then I see the client asking for linkedin profile, is this client a scammer ?.
Because also, The client was also asking basic questions, which I asumed like a free consultation service. The questions was like to read the job post about their plan then ask for feedback on their plan like, is the plan good ?. Because of that upon checking in community and found it's not allowed to share linkedin pre-hiring, so I withdrawn my proposal.
I know how freelancers scaming here, but I don't know how client are scamming freelancers. Someone please tell me how to detect a client scammer.

Hello Greetings!
Dear Ely, I appreciate your concern to get to know about how to avoid being scammed on Upwork.i want to make it clear to you that scamming is common in freelancing, it doesn't matter it's by freelancer side or client side. We must adopt precautionary measures to avoid being scammed.
It's also important to remember that not only freelancers do scams but also a freelancer can get a victim of scamming. Mostly it happens in hourly projects asking to buy some monetized channel or other social media profiles. In an hourly project, Upwork hourly payment system works but in the case you mentioned above regarding purchasing of a LinkedIn profile, the client might scam you. He will take Login from you and file a dispute against you, so all your funds will be reversed. It's important to remember that this even can happen if a client have a verified payment method.
In order to avoid these scams, I am sharing you some tips, I hope these will definitely help you some in this regard:
- Always check either the payment method is verified or not, remember verified payment method does not mean that a client is trust worthy.
- Always check the spendings by client on Upwork
- Always check the hire rate of client
- Always check the reviews
- Always carefully check the project description and what the client is asking. If there is a large difference then it's a risk signal. (i.e., On job description it was mentioned to market a YouTube channel but in conversation the client asked you for a monetized channel)
- Check the number of invites sent by client, A fake client send invites to maximum number of freelancers in a short time
- For these type of projects (like purchasing some social media), never take an hourly project, Asked the client to change the project into a fixed price
- Remember a fake client will offer you to pay a huge amount per hour for a small tasks to make client scam
I hope you will get some help from.these points, If still have any query, you can ask here or read Upwork articles regarding Upwork "hourly protection" and *trust and safety".
Thanks and regards
Husnain M.

Like: a 2000$ payment for typing 2 pdf pages into Word.
If a job is too good to be true, it's a scam.
If the client ask you to pay something to get the job done, it's a scam.
If you client ask you for a contact outside Upwork before you have a contract in place, it's a scam.

I don't understand why is that be a scam if it's indeed a valuable piece of work.
Well anyway, I have not been able to get them to send me a message after sending a proposal anyway.

Ely, you are talking about abstract $2000 but others are talking about the old well-known scam about $2000. Therefore it is difficult for you to grasp the essence. 🙂

It's like when you take that AI pasted text as a valuable piece of answer.
Anyone can paste you that "valuable piece of answer".😁

Its ok. Many scammers and almost no clients here.
Did you broke rules and reached scammer with outside communication? With rules violation you cannot expect anything except scam.

Hi Iman,
Please keep in mind that you shouldn't provide any work until your client sends you an offer and a contract is created under your My Jobs tab.A real client will never ask you to give them money to start working, cash a check for them, work for free, or provide your personal information.
I encourage you to let us know if a TOS violation has happened by using the Flag as Inappropriate option throughout the platform. You can learn more about user reporting here.
Additionally, I would recommend you check this help article and available learning paths in the Academy section to help you stay safe on Upwork.
~ Nikola
