Quick reminder: It’s technically impossible to change a wallet’s recovery phrase or private keys. The only way to have a new set of recovery phrase is to generate a fresh new wallet, and moving your funds to that new wallet.
- Method 1: using a software wallet
- Method 2 (safer method): using 2 hardware wallets
Method 1: Using a software wallet
- Download a decently reputable mobile wallet such as BlueWallet or Coinomi.
- Generate a new wallet as you would do normally.
- Send the cryptocurrencies from your Ledger wallet to the mobile wallet you newly created.
- Once all your coins/tokens are now stored using the new mobile wallet, simply reset your Ledger wallet by entering the wrong pin code 3 times.
- Once your Ledger wallet has been reset, generate another wallet using your Ledger by going through the same process you did when you generated your first Ledger wallet.
- After generating your new Ledger wallet, send back the funds from your mobile wallet to your new Ledger wallet.
Some pointers:
- Depending on your phone’s security, this method could potentially be risky.
- You can also use your computer instead of using your mobile phone, but mobile phones are mostly more secure.
Method 2 (safer method): Using 2 hardware wallets
- Generate a new wallet on your second hardware wallet.
- Send the cryptocurrencies from your old Ledger wallet to your second hardware wallet.
- After all your coins/tokens have been transferred, simply reset your Ledger wallet by entering the wrong pin code 3 times.
- Once your Ledger wallet has been reset, generate another wallet using your Ledger by going through the same process you did when you generated your first Ledger wallet.
- After generating your new Ledger wallet, send back the funds from your second hardware wallet to your new Ledger wallet.
Some pointers:
- You can use any hardware wallet, though we’d recommend using either a Trezor, a Ledger, or a Coldcard.
