How Much RAM Usage is Normal [When Idle & Maxed Out] (2024)

All computers come with random access memory (RAM). RAM is utilized by a computer and a percentage of the RAM is in use at all times. In this article, I will explain how much RAM usage is normal.

On average, your RAM usage should be 50% or lower with nothing open at all.

With an internet browser open with a few tabs, about 75% RAM usage is normal. When gaming, it’s not uncommon to see RAM usage max out at 100%. Ideally RAM usage should be as high as possible.

The amount of RAM usage depends on how much RAM your computer has. Based on how much RAM a computer has, below I will cover:

  • How much RAM usage is normal for Windows 11
  • How much memory usage is normal idle
  • How much RAM usage is too much

Let’s dive in!

Normal RAM Usage For Windows 11

Windows 11 was recently released, and almost everyone loves the new user interface. One concern with new versions of Windows is if they use more computer resources. So, here is what the normal RAM usage is for Windows 11.

On average, Windows 11 uses about 50% or less of your RAM. If you have 32 GB of RAM it will use close to 5%. Whereas, if you have 8GB it will use about 50%. It’s best to max out your RAM usage. Doing so utilizes all of your computer's resources.

About 10 years ago 4GB was standard on laptops. But, nowadays the new minimum is 8GB of RAM.

With the ideal amount of RAM being 8GB to 16GB. Interestingly, Windows 11 uses an almost identical amount of resources to Windows 10.

I explained this in more detail in this article about whether Windows 11 uses more resources than Windows 10. It includes independent testing data to verify how they differ in CPU, and RAM usage. As well as, a side by side speed test.

How Much RAM Usage Is Too Much

In some cases RAM usage can go all the way to 100%. Especially, when gaming, or rendering a video. Your computer should NOT be at 100% when idle. But, this will only ever happen if you have less than 8GB of RAM.

If your PC is using more than 90% when idle, there is likely a virus or background apps that are using all of your RAM.

You should investigate further to identify what’s causing it. However, when gaming it’s perfectly normal and fine for the RAM to go all the way to 100% and stay there permanently.

In general, provided you have 8GB of RAM or more there should be no issues with RAM reducing performance on your computer.

Regardless, of how much RAM your computer is using. If your RAM usage is at 100% when idle it means there’s none left to open a program or app.

But, as mentioned this will never happen unless you have an update in the background, a virus, or malware, or your computer has less than 4GB of RAM. In which case, it’s worth getting more RAM. RAM is very inexpensive.

How Much Memory Usage is Normal Idle

30% to 50% memory usage is normal when idle for computers with 8GB to 16GB of RAM. If your PC has 32GB normal memory usage when idle will be around 5%.

In general, you want your RAM usage to be as high as possible. But, when idle Windows doesn’t use very much RAM.

Previously I had a setting enabled called SysMain. It pre-loads the RAM with data for the most used programs such as Google Chrome. Doing so makes load times faster. When it’s enabled it takes up about 1GB of your RAM.

I disabled it, and freed up 1GB of RAM, and it didn’t appear to change my performance in any way. I covered this in more detail in this article about whether disabling Sysmain improves performance.

What is Normal RAM Usage in Task Manager

On average, 30% to 50% when idle is normal RAM usage in Task Manager when idle. It varies based on how much RAM a computer has.

For a PC with:

  • 4 GB - 80%+ RAM usage when idle is normal
  • 8 GB - 50% or less
  • 16 GB - 30% or less
  • 32 GB - 5% or less

But, having one or two Chrome tabs open can increase RAM usage by quite a bit, as well as background apps like Steam.

One Chrome tab with not much on it uses about 1% to 2% of the RAM on a computer. So, if you have 10 Google Chrome tabs open it uses 10% to 20% of the available RAM.

Whereas, a game open in the background like Steam uses about 5% of the available RAM. Depending on how much RAM you have. Here’s a table that shows this info in more detail.
