In Azure, there are primarily three types of pipelines:
1. Build Pipeline: A build pipeline, also known as a continuous integration (CI) pipeline, is responsible for compiling, building, and packaging source code into deployable artifacts. It typically involves tasks such as code compilation, running unit tests, code quality analysis, and generating build artifacts. Build pipelines are triggered by source code changes and help ensure that the application code is consistently built and tested.
2. Release Pipeline: A release pipeline, also known as a deployment pipeline or continuous delivery (CD) pipeline, focuses on deploying the built artifacts to various target environments, such as development, staging, and production. Release pipelines automate the deployment process, including tasks like environment provisioning, configuration management, deploying artifacts, running integration tests, and promoting releases across different stages. Release pipelines enable reliable and efficient application deployment.
3. Multi-stage Pipeline: Multi-stage pipelines are a combination of build and release pipelines, allowing you to define a series of stages that include build, test, and deployment tasks in a single pipeline. With multi-stage pipelines, you can have a more comprehensive and streamlined CI/CD workflow within a single pipeline definition. This approach eliminates the need to manage separate build and release pipelines, providing better visibility and control over the entire software delivery process.
These pipeline types in Azure provide flexibility and automation to ensure efficient and reliable software delivery from source code to deployment.
