Reading Time: 4 minutes

This article discusses fee-based smallcase subscriptions – including its features, pricing options and other related information.

Before we begin, let’s look at a quick primer on smallcases.

smallcases are baskets of stocks/ETFs that are based on an underlying theme, sector or strategy.

They are created by SEBI-registered professionals (also known as smallcase managers) and can be fee-based or non-fee-based.

Non-fee-based smallcases don’t require a fee for access. You can simply log in with your phone number, connect your broker or demat account, and start investing.

What are fee-based smallcases?

Fee-based smallcases require a subscription fee to access their underlying constituents.

The subscription fee is based on the plan duration, which can be monthly, quarterly, or annually, and is determined by the smallcase manager.

For instance, the subscription fee for the Value and Momentum smallcase managed by Windmill Capital is Rs 3000 for 3 months or Rs 8000 for a year. (Note: This is an example and not a recommendation.)

Let’s dive deeper.

What’s included as part of a fee-based smallcase subscription?

Once you subscribe to a smallcase, you’ll be able to access its underlying constituents (i.e., the stocks and/or ETFs) and make an investment should you wish.

You will also get access to timely rebalance updates from the smallcase manager. Rebalancing is the process of reviewing the underlying stocks/ETFs and their weights of a smallcase to ensure that it remains true to the theme or strategy.

Like with all smallcases, you can choose to invest or start an SIP in your subscribed smallcase at any point in time. You can also choose to add, edit, or remove any stock/ETF from your smallcase at any time.

Where can I find a list of fee-based and non-fee-based smallcases?

  • Non-fee-based smallcases: Head over to the Discover smallcases page, and select the Free access filter to get a list of all the non-fee-based smallcases
  • Fee-based smallcases: Simply select the Fee-based filter on the Discover smallcases page to get a list of all fee-based smallcases
  • Bonus: You can also get a list of all the smallcase managers from the Managers page

The Discover page also offers several useful filters, including investment amount, volatility, and investment strategy. Use these filters to find your next smallcase.

Here are some pre-built filters to get you started:

  • Top gainers in last year
  • Low investment amount
  • Popular investment strategies
  • Recently rebalanced smallcases

(Note: The aforementioned filters are not recommendations)

What happens after my fee-based smallcase subscription is over/cancelled?

Before your subscription ends, you’ll get a renewal notification 7 days prior to your renewal date.

Once your smallcase subscription expires, the only thing that you’ll no longer have access to is the rebalance updates.

If you had invested in the fee-based smallcase when your subscription was active, you would still be able to track its performance, invest more money in it, and add or remove any of its constituent stocks or ETFs.

You’ll always be in control.

How can I track my active/inactive smallcase subscriptions?

The smallcase app offers a comprehensive subscription management dashboard. You can seamlessly track and manage all your fee-based smallcase subscriptions, including historical (i.e. inactive or expired) subscriptions.

Here’s how you can access the smallcase subscription management dashboard:

  • Open the smallcase app
  • Click on the More tab → followed by Manage > Subscribed smallcases
  • This page will show all your active and inactive subscriptions
  • You can choose to cancel or renew your active and inactive subscriptions, respectively

How can I renew my smallcase subscription?

Head over to the smallcase subscription management page, select the subscription you want to renew and complete the process for renewal. Renewing a smallcase subscription will start the next subscription cycle from the end date of the previous subscription cycle.

How can I cancel a fee-based smallcase subscription?

Go to the smallcase subscription management page, select the subscription you want to cancel, and follow the next steps to cancel it.

Please note that cancellation does not lead to a refund. It only ensures that you will not be charged a subscription renewal fee in the future. You can cancel your subscription at any time. However, your subscription access remains active (i.e. you’ll be able to see the underlying stock/ETF constituents of your fee-based smallcase), and you’ll receive rebalance updates until the end of the current billing period.

Frequently Asked Questions on smallcase Subscriptions

1. What is a smallcase?

smallcases are portfolios of stocks and/or ETFs that track a theme, strategy or objective.

2. Is a smallcase subscription worth it?

This is subjective and depends on the individual investor’s risk appetite and investment strategy. Both fee-based and non-fee-based smallcases are available on the platform / smallcase app. It is the smallcase manager who decides the cost of a fee-based smallcase. We recommend understanding the manager and smallcase’s underlying investment methodology and fact sheet before subscribing to a fee-based smallcase.

3. How do smallcase subscriptions work?

A smallcase manager decides if a smallcase is fee-based or non-fee-based. Users can subscribe to a smallcase (one-time or recurring subscription) and access its underlying stocks/ETFs by paying a subscription fee. Users always have the option to cancel or renew their smallcase subscription.

4. Will I be able to invest in my smallcase after cancelling my subscription?

Yes, you can invest in your smallcase after cancelling your subscription. However, you will not receive rebalance updates from the manager once your subscription expires. You can always choose to renew your subscription.

5. Can I get a refund on my smallcase subscription after I cancel?

This depends on the smallcase manager. You can contact the smallcase manager’s support team for refund-related queries. The support email is available on the respective smallcase manager’s page.
