Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) allows Insight to detect and prevent broadcast storms caused by loops in your network.
A switching loop happens under two circ*mstances:
- A switch is connected to itself, either directly or indirectly.
For example, switch A is connected to switch B, which is connected to switch C, which is connected back to switch A. - Two switches are connected to each other by more than one path.
For example, switch A is connected to switch B; switch A is also connected to switch C, which is connected to switch B.
Broadcast storms caused by loops can slow or stop traffic on your network, but STP can prevent loops by ensuring that only one path between each set of switches is active.
Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) is newer than STP and can detect loops faster. However, some older devices do not support RSTP. Even if you select RSTP in Insight, if Insight detects that some devices are using STP, it automatically downgrades your Insight Managed switches to STP to maintain compatibility within your network.
You must enable or disable STP or RSTP for each network location in which you are using Insight Managed Switches. By default, STP is disabled.
To enable or disable Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) or Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) in the Insight mobile app:
- Launch the Insight mobile app.
- Tap Networks in the menu at the bottom.
- At the top, select the network location for which you want to enable or disable STP.
- Select Wired Settings > Spanning Tree (STP).
- Under Spanning Tree Mode, select Disable, STP, or RSTP.
- Tap Save.
Your changes are saved. It takes a few minutes for the new spanning tree mode to be applied to all of your Insight Managed switches in the network location that you selected.
To enable or disable Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) or Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) in the Insight Cloud Portal:
- Log in to the Insight Cloud Portal.
- Select the network location for which you want to enable or disable STP.
- Select Wired > Settings > Spanning Tree.
- Under Spanning Tree Mode, select Disable, STP, or RSTP.
- Tap Save.
Your changes are saved. It takes a few minutes for the new spanning tree mode to be applied to all of your Insight Managed switches in the network location that you selected.
