Darth Malak's iconic missing jaw allowed the major antagonist of the fan-favorite BioWare video game; Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic to have an incredibly foreboding presence. However, the origin for his missing jaw, as well as his decision to become a Sith Lord, was barely explained during the video game. The only answer Star Wars fans got was that he lost it after the Mandalorian Wars when he mysteriously turned against the Jedi Order.
Despite Darth Malak being the main antagonist of Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic, very little about the Sith Lord's past was revealed within the role-playing game. Much of the game's story favored the backstory of the far more famous Darth Revan instead of explaining how Darth Malak came to be the Sith Lord he was presented to Star Wars fans during the video game. Fans would get their answer to Darth Malak's fall from the Jedi Order in the Dark Horse ComicsStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic prequel series which delved into the wider Old Republic Era and the Mandalorian Wars.

When Darth Malak first appeared in Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic #0, he was depicted as a jovial and kind-hearted Jedi Knight by the name of Alek, a far cry from the rage fueled individual he would later become. Discontent with the Jedi High Council's decision to ignore the plight of hundreds of planets being ravaged by the Mandalorian Wars, Alek and a large group of Jedi Knights, banded behind the Jedi Master known as Revan to stop the Mandalorian Clans. Although Alek had a great desire to defeat the Mandalorians and bring an end to their crimes against the Galaxy, the Jedi conducted himself with honor during beginning of the conflict, even being portrayed making comedic jests to both his allies and his advisories within the comic series.
The origin of Darth Malak's rage was revealed in Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic #8 where he was horribly tortured by the sad*stic Mandalorian surgeon Doctor Demogal, compounding his growing hatred of the Mandalorians. In Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic #42, his hatred grew when he witnessed the Mandalorian War Lord Cassus Fett, an ancestor of Boba Fett, commit near-genocide on the planet Cathar while he and a Jedi Task Force was attempting to give aid to the planet's populace. His hatred would later prompt Alek into attacking a prisoner of war, beating the prisoner to a pulp while being blinded to the fact that the prisoner was a decoy and allowing the Mandalorians to kidnap his ally Jarael.

The war turned Alek into a far more brutal and humorless Jedi Knight, wanting far more to see the Mandalorians suffer than to stop them from harming others like he had set out to do. However, under the guise of Darth Malak, his far more ruthless demeanor made him begin to believe that Revan was far too soft to be a Sith Lord, much less his Sith Master and tried to confront Revan to stand down from any leadership role he may aspire to take.
Unfortunately for Darth Malak, Revan did not take kindly to being called soft by his subordinate and resolved to prove Malak wrong by cleaving his jaw off with a lightsaber, bequeathing his Sith underling with his iconic mutilated face that would become a central part of the characters design. Darth Malak understandably did not take kindly to such humiliation and later orchestrated the death of Revan by bombarding his master's flagship while he was distracted by a Jedi Taskforce led by Jedi Battlemaster; Bastila Shan, kick-starting the events of the Star Wars video game.
