Here’s what else to consider
Business email is a vital tool for communication, collaboration, and productivity, but it also exposes you to various risks, such as hacking, phishing, spying, and data breaches. If you want to protect your business email from these threats, you should consider using a VPN, or a virtual private network. A VPN is a service that encrypts and routes your internet traffic through a secure server in a different location, hiding your IP address and online activity from prying eyes. In this article, we will explain how you can use a VPN to protect your business email in four ways.
Key takeaways from this article
-
Encrypt your content:
Using a VPN secures your emails by encrypting the content. This means that only you and your intended recipient can read what's sent, especially on public Wi-Fi where risks are higher.
-
Vet your VPN provider:
Not all VPNs are trustworthy. Do your homework to find a VPN service with a solid reputation that doesn't trade or sell your data. Peace of mind comes from knowing who's behind the tech securing your emails.

1 Encrypt your email content
One of the main benefits of using a VPN is that it encrypts your email content, meaning that no one can read or intercept your messages, attachments, or passwords. This is especially important if you use public or unsecured Wi-Fi networks, such as those in cafes, hotels, or airports, where hackers can easily access your data. By using a VPN, you can ensure that your email content is only visible to you and your intended recipients, and not to anyone else.

This is not entirely true. Once your emails leave your network after sending them they can then be read. Not all VPN platforms enctypt them. It may be an extra step u have to take. You however can prevent a threat actor from knowing the location they came from by hiding your IP address. Do not be fooled into thinking that using a VPN service is going to protect you from being hacked. Research all of your security options and do not just use one. Protect your business by taking steps to protect each aspect of your data coming in and going out.

A VPN encrypts your business email traffic, securing remote access, bypassing restrictions, preventing data leaks, and enhancing privacy. It protects sensitive information, ensures secure connections on public Wi-Fi, and is essential for safeguarding business communications.

2 Hide your email metadata
Another advantage of using a VPN is that it hides your email metadata, which is the information that accompanies your email, such as the sender, recipient, subject, date, and time. This metadata can reveal a lot about your business, such as your contacts, clients, partners, projects, schedules, and interests. If someone gets access to your email metadata, they can use it to target you with spam, phishing, or malware, or to track your online behavior and preferences. By using a VPN, you can mask your email metadata, making it harder for anyone to identify or monitor you.

In my opinion, deploying a VPN for business email operations effectively hides email metadata by obscuring the sender's IP address, encrypting data, and thwarting location tracking. This ensures enhanced privacy and security, safeguarding against surveillance and unauthorized access to critical communication information. With email metadata concealed, businesses can maintain anonymity, mitigate targeted attacks, and fortify the confidentiality of their communication channels, bolstering the integrity of their email infrastructure.

3 Bypass geo-restrictions and censorship
A third benefit of using a VPN is that it allows you to bypass geo-restrictions and censorship that may affect your email access or delivery. Some countries or regions may block or limit certain email services or platforms, such as Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo, for political or regulatory reasons. This can hamper your business communication and operations, especially if you work with international clients or colleagues. By using a VPN, you can change your IP address and location, and access any email service or platform you want, regardless of where you are.

4 Prevent bandwidth throttling and speed issues
A fourth benefit of using a VPN is that it can prevent bandwidth throttling and speed issues that may affect your email performance. Bandwidth throttling is when your internet service provider (ISP) deliberately slows down your internet speed based on your usage or traffic type. This can happen if you send or receive a lot of emails, especially with large attachments or media files. This can affect your email efficiency and reliability, and cause delays or errors. By using a VPN, you can avoid bandwidth throttling and speed issues, and enjoy faster and smoother email communication.
Using a VPN to protect your business email is a smart and simple way to enhance your security, privacy, and productivity. A VPN can encrypt your email content, hide your email metadata, bypass geo-restrictions and censorship, and prevent bandwidth throttling and speed issues. All you need to do is choose a reputable and reliable VPN service, install it on your devices, and connect to a server of your choice. Then, you can use your business email with confidence and peace of mind.

Do your research! Not all VPNs are created equal and some will do the exact opposite of what you are trying to accomplish. Many VPNs will sell or trade your data that is supposed to be encrypted. If you are going to invest in a VPN make sure you know where you data is, how it is encrypted and who actually owns the company and track record of said company.
