The BIOS, or Basic Input/Output System, is a firmware that controls how your motherboard communicates with your hardware components. It also stores some essential settings that affect your system's performance, boot time, and stability. By optimizing your BIOS settings, you can improve your computer's speed, reliability, and compatibility. Here are some tips on how to do that.

1 Update your BIOS

The first step to optimize your BIOS settings is to make sure you have the latest version of your BIOS firmware. Manufacturers often release updates that fix bugs, add features, and improve compatibility with new hardware and software. Updating your BIOS can also solve some common issues like boot failures, crashes, or freezes. To update your BIOS, you need to download the latest firmware file from your motherboard's website and follow the instructions on how to flash it. Be careful not to interrupt the process or turn off your computer, as this can damage your BIOS and make your system unbootable.

2 Enable fast boot

One of the most noticeable benefits of optimizing your BIOS settings is reducing your boot time. A fast boot option can help you achieve that by skipping some unnecessary steps and checks during the startup process. For example, it can disable the memory test, the logo screen, or the device detection. To enable fast boot, you need to look for the option in your BIOS menu, usually under the boot or advanced tab. Depending on your motherboard model, you may have different levels of fast boot, such as normal, ultra, or ultra fast. Choose the one that suits your needs and preferences.

3 Adjust your RAM settings

Another way to optimize your BIOS settings is to tweak your RAM settings. RAM, or Random Access Memory, is the temporary storage that your computer uses to run programs and tasks. By adjusting your RAM settings, you can improve your system's speed and stability. Some of the most important RAM settings are the frequency, the voltage, and the timings. The frequency is the speed at which your RAM operates, measured in megahertz (MHz). The voltage is the amount of power that your RAM receives, measured in volts (V). The timings are the intervals that your RAM takes to perform certain operations, measured in nanoseconds (ns). To adjust your RAM settings, you need to look for the option in your BIOS menu, usually under the memory or overclocking tab. You can either use the default settings, the XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) settings, or the manual settings. The default settings are the safest and most compatible, but they may not use the full potential of your RAM. The XMP settings are the predefined settings that your RAM manufacturer recommends, but they may not work with all motherboards. The manual settings are the custom settings that you can set yourself, but they require more knowledge and testing.

Make sure you test to make sure what the proper config is set for the ram. On Intel its' XPS settings. AMD I'm not sure. The default voltage might also cause a computer to crash intermittently.

4 Disable unused devices

A simple but effective way to optimize your BIOS settings is to disable the devices that you don't use or need. This can free up some resources, reduce power consumption, and prevent conflicts or errors. For example, you can disable the onboard audio, video, or network cards if you have dedicated ones. You can also disable the serial, parallel, or floppy ports if you don't use them. To disable unused devices, you need to look for the option in your BIOS menu, usually under the peripherals or integrated devices tab. You can also enable or disable the legacy or UEFI modes, depending on your operating system and boot device.

5 Configure your fan settings

The last tip to optimize your BIOS settings is to configure your fan settings. The fan settings control how your cooling system works, which affects your system's temperature, noise, and lifespan. By configuring your fan settings, you can balance your cooling performance and your acoustic comfort. Some of the most common fan settings are the fan speed, the fan curve, and the fan mode. The fan speed is the rate at which your fan rotates, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). The fan curve is the graph that shows how your fan speed changes according to your system's temperature. The fan mode is the option that determines how your fan behaves, such as silent, normal, or performance. To configure your fan settings, you need to look for the option in your BIOS menu, usually under the hardware monitor or fan control tab. You can either use the default settings, the preset profiles, or the manual settings.
