1 Check your CPU temperature

The first step is to check your CPU temperature and see if it is within the normal range. Different CPUs have different optimal temperatures, but generally, anything above 80°C (176°F) is considered too high. You can use various software tools to monitor your CPU temperature, such as HWMonitor, Core Temp, or SpeedFan. These tools will show you the current, minimum, and maximum temperatures of your CPU cores, as well as other components like your motherboard, GPU, and hard drive.

Managing CPU temperature is crucial for performance and longevity. While 80°C is a general guideline, each CPU has unique temperature limits; consult your CPU's documentation for precise details. Differentiating between core and package temperatures is vital. Core temps monitor individual cores, revealing performance insights, while package temps assess overall health. Sustained high package temps should raise concerns. Understanding thermal throttling is key; CPUs reduce speed to limit heat, impacting performance. Enthusiast coolers enhance thermal control to prevent this. In real-world use, staying within the CPU's range is generally fine. Occasionally hitting 80°C isn't typically problematic, unless it remains constant.

2 Clean your PC

One of the most common causes of high CPU temperature is dust and dirt buildup inside your PC case. Dust can clog your fans, vents, and heatsinks, preventing proper airflow and cooling. To clean your PC, you will need a can of compressed air, a soft cloth, and a screwdriver. First, turn off your PC and unplug it from the power source. Then, open your PC case and gently blow away the dust from your components, especially your CPU fan and heatsink. You can also use a cloth to wipe away any stubborn dirt. Be careful not to touch any sensitive parts or damage any wires. After cleaning, close your PC case and plug it back in.

Removable dust filters are cheap - most have magnetic attachment points for simple installation and allow you to keep your computer dust free without having to regularly open the case. Most of the time, you’ve spent $1k+ on your computer - another $50 for two sets of dust filters (swap them out when it’s time to clean so you don’t have to wait for them to dry after cleaning before starting up the computer again) is nothing by comparison but will give you fantastic returns in time/labor savings.

One thing I've found extremely helpful is an Electric Compressed Air Duster. Most of them come with rechargeable batteries and different speed settings, so it would be a much cheaper investment than constantly needing to buy compressed air cans. You can pick one up for around £30 on Amazon, and some of them have type-c ports! Of course, once you blow all the dust away, you can still use a cloth to clean it up or use a Hoover to clean up any mess, just make sure you don't accidentally suck in any sensitive parts!

Dust accumulation has a significant impact on the efficiency of heatsinks and radiators in heat dissipation. Heatsinks and radiators are designed with numerous fins to increase surface area for heat dissipation; however, when dust forms insulating layers on these fins, this becomes meaningless. Heat transfer from components such as the CPU to the heatsink is hampered by this insulation. Dust traps heat, potentially resulting in thermal throttling, in which the CPU reduces performance to prevent overheating. Cleaning heatsinks and PC components on a regular basis is critical for ensuring efficient heat dissipation, preventing elevated temperatures, and ensuring optimal performance.

3 Improve your airflow

To reduce the CPU temperature, you can improve the airflow inside your PC case. Airflow is the movement of air from the intake fans to the exhaust fans, helping to dissipate heat from components. To improve your airflow, ensure your intake and exhaust fans are spinning in the right direction. You can add more or faster fans on the front, back, top, or side of your PC case. Additionally, remove any cables or components that block the airflow and any unused optical drives, hard drives, or expansion cards that take up space and create clutter. Cable ties, clips, or sleeves can be used to organize and secure cables behind your motherboard tray or in the empty drive bays.

You generally want more positive or neutral air pressure in your case than negative pressure. Pretty much more air coming in. There are plenty helpful videos on YouTube from popular TechTubers channels like Gamer Nexus and JayzTwoCents for example, that explains this and more.

Optimizing airflow within your PC case is critical for keeping your CPU cool and overall system performance high. Fans are crucial in this equation. Making sure they're spinning properly and considering strategic fan placements or upgrades can have a big impact on temperature regulation. It's critical to strike a balance between intake and exhaust fans to avoid dust and debris buildup, especially if you prefer negative airflow, where exhaust fans outnumber intake. Negative airflow can draw dust into the system through unfiltered openings, potentially shortening its lifespan. As a result, careful fan management not only keeps your CPU cooler but also contributes to the overall health of your system.

4 Upgrade your cooler

If none of the above steps help to lower your CPU temperature, you might need to upgrade your cooler. Your cooler is the device that transfers heat from your CPU to the air or liquid, depending on the type. There are two main types of coolers: air coolers and liquid coolers. Air coolers use a fan and a heatsink, which is a metal block with fins that increase the surface area for heat dissipation. Liquid coolers use a pump, a radiator, and a water block, which is a metal block with channels that circulate coolant through your CPU. Both types have their pros and cons, but generally, liquid coolers are more efficient, quieter, and more expensive than air coolers. To upgrade your cooler, you will need to check the compatibility, size, and installation of your new cooler with your CPU and PC case.

This discussion is more relevant to desktop computers and servers. If you have a fan and heat sink, worth maybe upgrading to a liquid AIO (all in one) system. Rather simple and inexpensive.

High-end air coolers perform similarly to AIO water coolers but have fewer drawbacks. AIOs can be more complicated and expensive. For efficient heat dissipation, air coolers use a simpler design with fans and heatsinks. While powerful, custom water cooling necessitates expertise. A top-tier air cooler is efficient without the complexities and costs of water cooling for a simple upgrade, especially if you're not an experienced builder. Reputable brands such as Noctua and be quiet! are well-known for producing high-quality, low-noise coolers that are ideal for CPU cooling upgrades.

5 Change your settings

To reduce your CPU temperature, you can adjust settings on your software or hardware that affect how hard your CPU works. Lowering graphics settings in CPU-intensive games or applications, such as reducing resolution, texture quality, or anti-aliasing can reduce the workload and power consumption of your CPU. You can also enable power-saving modes or features on your operating system or BIOS, and choose a power plan that balances performance and energy efficiency. Additionally, you can try undervolting or underclocking your CPU. Undervolting is reducing the voltage that your CPU receives and underclocking is reducing the frequency that your CPU runs at. Both methods can lower power consumption and heat output, but can cause instability or crashes if done incorrectly. Through research and testing, you can lower your CPU temperature if it is too high or overheating, and improve your computer's performance, reliability, and longevity.

Setting optimization is critical for lowering CPU temperature during demanding tasks. Lowering the graphics settings reduces the CPU workload. Enable power-saving modes and select a power plan that is balanced. Undervolting or underclocking should be done with caution. Temperature control and performance are improved through research and testing. Different operating systems have an impact on performance; Linux excels at heat management due to its low background usage. However, unofficial options such as Atlas OS should be avoided unless you truly understand what you're doing because they can alter security systems. The operating system you choose has a significant impact on CPU temperature and system efficiency.

Some other things to consider are the physical placement of your computer in the room and the ambient temperature of the room. If you are constantly getting high temperatures, but your computer is jammed inside a desk with a door that is closed, you can bet it probably isn't getting much airflow, and the hot air that is escaping is probably getting trapped around the computer and getting sucked right back in. If this is a generally hot room, or if there is a lot of direct sunlight where the computer sits, you will have a lower ability to cool. Servers rooms in an office environment have dedicated air conditioning for this very reason. Consider relocating the computer if possible or even adding an external fan if you are still running hot.
