1 Define clear goals and expectations
One of the keys to effective leadership is to set clear and realistic goals and expectations for your team. This helps them understand what they need to do, how they will be measured, and why their work matters. You can use tools like SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) criteria to define your goals and communicate them to your team. You should also provide regular feedback and recognition to your team members, and address any issues or concerns promptly and constructively.

Leading accounting team effectively cannot be separated from effective leadership. So, leadership is an act of driving others to success through setting goals and effective communication. For an accounting team to be successful, we must set goals and priorities and make sure we are driving towards the attainment of these goals. We must also ensure accountability and stewardship for effective management of financials. It’s important to note that our goals and objectives must be SMART - Specific, measurable, attainable, result and timetable, without this the leadership may not drive towards efficient result.

It starts with trust. If you cannot establish trust with your team, transparency about the facts can often become clouded. The fundamental belief that we are on the same team driving to the same purpose absent the cast of doubt and blame will create an organization that cannot be competed with.

2 Delegate and empower your team
Another important skill for accounting leaders is to delegate tasks and empower your team to make decisions and solve problems. This shows that you trust and value their expertise and abilities, and gives them more autonomy and ownership of their work. Delegating also frees up your time to focus on strategic and high-level tasks, and avoid micromanaging or overloading yourself. You can delegate effectively by choosing the right tasks, the right people, and the right level of authority and support for each assignment.

Delegating and empowering your accounting team involves assigning tasks based on individual strengths and capabilities, entrusting them with responsibilities, and providing autonomy. Clearly define the scope of their authority and set achievable goals. Encourage team members to make decisions within their purview and offer support when needed. Foster a culture of open communication and provide opportunities for professional growth and learning. This approach boosts team morale, efficiency, and innovation while allowing you to focus on strategic aspects of accounting management.

When moving to Spain and out of the day to day of my accountancy I found giving responsibility to my team made them thrive in the environment and culture I left behind. So much so the I thanked 3 of them by becoming an employee owned business. Since doing this Profits have improved year on year.

3 Develop your team's skills and potential
As a leader, you should also invest in your team's professional development and growth. You can do this by providing them with opportunities to learn new skills, take on new challenges, and advance their careers. You can also coach and mentor your team members, and help them identify and achieve their goals. By developing your team's skills and potential, you not only improve their performance and satisfaction, but also create a pipeline of future leaders for your organization.

Building capacity and mentorship is very key, as it will ensure that at no given time will the accounts/finance department run short of a talented workforce that is able to efficiently and effectively execute the demands of the department. And the team will always be prepared to face any accounting or finance industry-related disruptions.

4 Communicate and collaborate with your team
Communication and collaboration are essential for any accounting team, especially in a dynamic and complex environment. You should communicate clearly and frequently with your team, and use different channels and methods to suit different situations and preferences. You should also encourage your team to communicate and collaborate with each other, and with other departments and stakeholders. You can foster a culture of communication and collaboration by creating a shared vision and values, promoting transparency and feedback, and celebrating successes and learning from failures.

Communication needs to be a consistent task with the team.Regular catch ups!The power of just "checking in" with your team is really powerful.I'd rather an honest team, who can share what's not working and also what can be done better.I take great satisfaction when the team can do that. That's when you know you're doing something right!

This is the bit that many accounting teams fail on. In a small accounting team there should be opportunities to communicate in a daily huddle and a weekly operational meeting. This should be supplemented by an open chat channel on slack, google chat or teams (or other messaging service). Then finally there should be between the leader and individual, the monthly 1:2:1s, quarterly review and reset meetings to agree on KPIs, targets etc, and then informal check ins. In addition you need to set up the structures for your team to go to others in the team, not just always going through you.

5 Lead by example and inspire your team
Finally, as a leader, you should lead by example and inspire your team to follow your lead. You should demonstrate the behaviors and attitudes that you expect from your team, such as integrity, professionalism, accountability, and excellence. You should also show your passion and enthusiasm for your work, and your commitment to your team's success. By leading by example and inspiring your team, you can build trust and respect, motivate and engage your team, and create a positive and productive work environment.

You have to walk your walk and talk your talk. If you don’t role model what you want from your team, they wouldn’t be who you want them to be. The behaviour of small teams - and especially their culture - comes directly from how the team leader behaves.

Separate tasks and segregation of duties:For more effecciency, Teams should be separated by responsabilities and tasks, like asset accouting, AP, AR accounting. Above all when the company is big and or transactions are huge. Also segregation of duties should be taken into account such as invoices accountant should be different from payment, this will enforce security and complaience of the accounting department

Give the team the opportunity and freedom to be independent in completing their tasks and work up to the level of difficulty when it is time for them to need help and direction from us. And at that time we can educate and provide the right solutions and direction for them to implement.
