Values tend to be very vague and general. What you need to establish is also what precise outcomes you want to stay away from, what harms for your stakeholders you want to absolutely avoid. ‘Do no harm’ is one fundamental ethical principle we should live by.

We have to be careful when selecting these tools and opt for trustworthy partners whose AI systems are less biased and more mature. They should have well-defined security frameworks that have been successfully implemented in past initiatives. Additionally, we must ensure they do not share sensitive information with subsidiaries or other companies and closely scrutinize their past records regarding data security.

Selecting the right AI system is just the beginning. Ongoing monitoring and validation are key.In the real world, this means not just initial tests but continuous evaluation against performance benchmarks. Also, it's important to engage in open dialogues with AI system providers to understand any updates or changes in algorithms. If your team members have insufficient ability to recognize when they are making an ethically-laden decision, no way can they follow any ethical guidelines. It's as simple as that.

Recently, I advised a company's AI team on responsible AI and posed three key questions. First, I asked about the decision-making process in case of biases or risks in the AI system. No one in the team had the authority to stop the project. Nobody knew who in the company had the authority to call it off. Second, I inquired about team members with AI ethics backgrounds, and unfortunately, there were none. Lastly, I inquired about the use of industry frameworks or developing their own, and they lacked both. This revelation emphasized the need to establish a clear AI governance structure, include ethics expertise, and adopt robust frameworks for responsible AI practices within the team.

EDUCATIONEducation is everything.Employees need their companies to guide them through the learning / consciousness cycle of AI, from understanding the state or the art, contextualizing the development of AI and being able to remove fears and blockers to use it, to being able to empower their individual creativity (curiosity, critical thinking, problem solving, innovation) to the power of AI, to understanding and walking together with the whole company their AI Transformation process.This process is not only about technology, also about business strategy, culture and governance.And for all those, education is the king.
