Clear goals and shared values are the cornerstone of responsible AI use in a team. We ensure that every AI initiative aligns with our core values—transparency, fairness, and accountability. By setting these benchmarks, we create a framework that guides our decisions. It's not just about leveraging AI for efficiency; it's about upholding ethics. My team regularly revisits these goals to adapt to new insights or societal expectations. This approach has fostered trust within the team and with our stakeholders, proving that ethical AI is not only possible but also beneficial for sustainable progress.

Ensuring responsible usage of AI is imperative, demanding a comprehensive grasp of its purpose and application. I would say that a lucid understanding of the objectives and potential hazards is essential. Addressing these risks necessitates a strategic approach: How can we effectively mitigate these challenges, and what regulatory frameworks are in place? It is crucial to ascertain compliance with these regulations. Clarity on these aspects is indispensable for responsible AI utilization

I agree that AI should be adopted only when necessary to the goals of the team. However when working towards responsible AI, starting by *only* looking at values may backfire. Values tend to be very vague and general. What you need to establish is also what precise outcomes you want to stay away from, what harms for your stakeholders you want to absolutely avoid. ‘Do no harm’ is one fundamental ethical principle we should live by.

The benefits and risks of AI are akin to a double-edged sword. On one side, there's the sharp efficiency and the dazzling precision it brings to tasks, cutting through complexities quickly. Yet, on the other side, there's the risk of it becoming too sharp, slicing through the fabric of team dynamics, or cutting corners in ethical and moral considerations. Before unleashing the genie of AI from its digital lamp, it's wise to chart a course, set boundaries, and define the wishes it should grant. It's about harnessing a powerful force with a blend of wisdom, foresight, and responsibility, ensuring that this digital sorcerer's apprentice serves the team's quest, not leads it astray.

Integrating AI into a team's workflow necessitates careful deliberation to align with the team's objectives and values. It's crucial to ensure the AI's capabilities complement the team's mission, enhancing efficiency without compromising core values. Evaluating both the benefits and risks is essential; AI can significantly boost productivity and decision-making but may also present challenges in areas like data privacy and job displacement. Establishing clear metrics for assessing AI's impact on team outcomes and stakeholder interests is vital. This approach not only fosters responsible AI use but also ensures that its implementation is in harmony with the team's culture and long-term goals.

2 Choose trustworthy and transparent AI systems

Not all AI systems are created equal. Some may be more reliable, accurate, and secure than others. Some may be more explainable, accountable, and fair than others. You need to choose AI systems that are trustworthy and transparent, meaning that they can perform as intended, justify their decisions, and avoid bias and harm. You also need to ensure that you have the right data, tools, and skills to use them effectively and safely. You can do this by researching the sources, methods, and features of the AI systems you use, and by testing and validating them before and after deployment.

The best way to explain #Responsible AI is by understanding what are the repercussions. So Boeing used #AI for its flight control system for the 737-MAX but the #AI developed was not #ResponsibleAI which mean't disaster. The #AI flight control systems (MCAS) on its 737 Max aircraft, led to two crashes, killing 346 people. And that my dear friends is the reason you need to choose AI systems that are trustworthy and transparent, meaning that they can perform as intended, justify their decisions, and avoid bias and harm. And not put people in danger. If you do not use the principles of Responsible AI and not choose trustworthy and transparent AI systems you are putting in people in for a huge risk.

In a marketing gimmick, more and more companies have been selling their products based on the AI tag. We have to be careful when selecting these tools and opt for trustworthy partners whose AI systems are less biased and more mature. They should have well-defined security frameworks that have been successfully implemented in past initiatives. Additionally, we must ensure they do not share sensitive information with subsidiaries or other companies and closely scrutinize their past records regarding data security.

Selecting the right AI system is just the beginning. Ongoing monitoring and validation are key.In the real world, this means not just initial tests but continuous evaluation against performance benchmarks. Also, it's important to engage in open dialogues with AI system providers to understand any updates or changes in algorithms. This ensures that any system you choose remains trustworthy and transparent throughout its lifecycle, adapting to new data and contexts.

3 Involve and empower your team members

AI is not a substitute for human intelligence, creativity, and collaboration. It is a complement that can augment your team's capabilities and potential. Therefore, you need to involve and empower your team members in the design, development, and use of AI systems. You can do this by soliciting their input, feedback, and suggestions, by providing them with training and support, and by recognizing and rewarding their contributions. You also need to respect their rights, privacy, and dignity, and to ensure that they have the option to opt out or override the AI systems when needed.

It is important that you involve and empower your team member while building AI.I can explain this by an example. It took less than 24 hours for Twitter to corrupt an innocent AI chatbot. Microsoft unveiled Tay , a Twitter bot that the company described as an experiment in "conversational understanding." Unfortunately, the conversations didn't stay playful for long. Pretty soon after Tay launched, people starting tweeting the bot with all sorts of misogynistic, racist remarks. And Tay essentially a robot parrot with an internet connection, started repeating these sentiments back to users. And the lesson Microsoft learned was to do AI right, one needs to iterate with many people and often in public forums

Informing and empowering team members is crucial for responsible AI use. Educating the team about ethical AI practices fosters an environment where everyone is aware of AI technologies' potential impacts and challenges. This includes understanding biases, data privacy concerns, and ethical implications of AI decisions. However, more than simply disseminating information is required. Empowering team members to apply this knowledge, question practices, and make ethical decisions is vital. Encouraging active participation in honest discussions and decision-making ensures a collective responsibility towards ethical AI use. This approach mitigates risks and cultivates a culture of ethical awareness and responsibility in AI development.

Involving team members in the design, development, and application of AI systems is crucial for fostering a sense of ownership and acceptance. This can be achieved by actively seeking their input, feedback, and suggestions. Speed caused by unrealistic timelines often set by stakeholders that are distant from the technological complexity in building AI systems is not a good advisor for the development. Therefore, it's important to create a culture of open dialogue when it comes to assess the status of current developments as neutral as possible. If people developing a system don't feel they can speak up, when problems occur (which is normal), then they will try to hide or soften the consequences.

4 Monitor and review your AI use

AI is not a static or fixed technology. It is a dynamic and evolving one that can change over time and in different contexts. Therefore, you need to monitor and review your AI use regularly and systematically. You can do this by collecting and analyzing data on the performance, outcomes, and impacts of the AI systems you use, by identifying and addressing any issues or problems that arise, and by updating and improving the AI systems as needed. You also need to communicate and report your AI use to your team members, managers, and other stakeholders, and to seek their feedback and input.

Monitoring is critical when using LLMs, especially if you are relying on external vendors. Small changes to the underlying model can cause a shift in the expected results. Checking for PII and having circuitbreakers that avoid presenting PII to customers is important (I've been told of one large company that noticed their model was hallucinating a *support number* that didn't exist! But it was caught by the PII filters). Using semantic scoring for known-good answers is also useful to identify gradual drift in response qualities.

5 Follow ethical and legal guidelines

AI is not a neutral or value-free technology. It is a social and political one that can reflect and affect the values, norms, and interests of its creators, users, and society. Therefore, you need to follow ethical and legal guidelines when using AI in your team. You can do this by adhering to the principles and standards of your organization, industry, and profession, by complying with the laws and regulations of your country and region, and by respecting the rights and interests of your customers, partners, and competitors. You also need to be aware of and address any ethical and legal dilemmas or conflicts that may arise from your AI use.

For a company to establish a reliable and trustworthy AI infrastructure, it is imperative that all team members have a proper understanding of AI risk and a solid ethical-choice awareness. This requires providing ethical-choice training to all personnel, which is honestly the first risk mitigation strategy that any company must adopt if they intend to build trust and ensure the responsible creation and deployment of AI. If your team members have insufficient ability to recognize when they are making an ethically-laden decision, no way can they follow any ethical guidelines. It's as simple as that.

To ensure responsible AI use, a culture of transparency and accountability are key. Businesses should establish clear ethical guidelines and compliance protocols and policies tailored to both their values and legal requirements. They should implement regular training programs for employees to foster awareness of the ethical and legal considerations in AI development, deployment, and use and should consider instituting regular internal audits to help ensure guidelines, protocols, and policies are being complied with. Moreover, businesses should remember that regulations and law in the AI space is consistently evolving and the business should be prepared to regularly revisit and update guidelines, protocols, and policies to remain compliant.

You may have just exposed your research sample to potential identification and harm by an automated machine that can make relational links quickly and without concern about impact on those in the sample. Meanwhile, large scale data scraping arising from these tools is underway, under the guise of teaching and improving the language models that drive them. As a result of this it's paramount as identify clear policies for responsible AI, and hold to account those who deploy them in anti human ways, rather than pro human.

Recently, I advised a company's AI team on responsible AI and posed three key questions. First, I asked about the decision-making process in case of biases or risks in the AI system. No one in the team had the authority to stop the project. Nobody knew who in the company had the authority to call it off. Second, I inquired about team members with AI ethics backgrounds, and unfortunately, there were none. Lastly, I inquired about the use of industry frameworks or developing their own, and they lacked both. This revelation emphasized the need to establish a clear AI governance structure, include ethics expertise, and adopt robust frameworks for responsible AI practices within the team.
