I feel all professional assignments come with their own quota of responsibilities, and pressure of due deliveries does carry stress. However, Civil engineers end up bearing the brunt of a Project delays(alhough the revisions by Client/Architect/MEP/Structural engineers' teams maybe the real culprit). I feel one needs to be organised enough to pinpoint the actual source of delay, if it happens, and in fact with experience be able to predict and foresee such happenings in future and take steps to avoid them. And also practice meditation and Yoga:-)

Seamless communication right fromThe initial stages of the project play a crucial role in resolving the issues raised by the stakeholders which could otherwise impact the project program hence the budget. It will also lead to abortive and repetitive work which collectively harm the overall project and build pressure on a project team and the program. The consultant's reputation is also at stake in front of the client if the key issues haven't been taken into consideration from the initial stages of the project. Proper resource management with a team that has right skill set will meet the project objectives and improves the quality of the deliverables and meeting the client's expectations.

Pressure is always bound to occur as strict timelines are to be met and sometimes with limited resources. As a civil engineer the approach to adopt is effective communication. Clients are very demanding when it comes to delivery. You need to communicate with the client at every step of the project to avoid such pressures. Also in managing pressure u have to communicate with management alot since they are the custodians of the resources you need to achieve your milestones. A management that fails to support and back its civil engineer with resources only adds up to the pressure in delivering the tasks.

Excessive pressure should be managed by reducing and phasing it to acceptable levels under which work can be effective, efficient and while working with the team in good mood. The Civil engineer managing his team at any level be it junior, senior, or managerial , should be like a sponge to absorb untolerable pressure and distribute it evenly to his team to produce the needed within time frame.

Creating a routine that allows you to operate at your maximum is critical. Giving yourself time to reflect and relax and recap the days events and conducting personal critism are some of the ways to help one deal with pressure.Developing effective communication and relationships with your colleagues helps in lessening the burden. Knowing when and how to delegate tasks is also crucial

Having more than a cursory understanding of the software and it’s use is paramount to a successful project, as well as avoiding costly budget overruns. Rely on your drafters and designers to help guide you in budgeting and scheduling as Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither are complex 3D models!
