Stretching south and west from Buenos Aires are the yawning plains and fertile soils of the pampas.
Overview
Best known for being the home of the gauchos, Argentina’s famous baggy-trousered cowboys, the pampa stretches south and west from Buenos Aires. It’s a region of endless yawning plains, the fertile soils of which support succulent pasture for the country’s revered beef cattle, along with golden wheat and sunflowers. Pretty featureless apart from some attractive little towns, the flat pampa can be atmospheric in a morning mist or when reflecting an apricot sunset. The landscape is divided into estancias, or ranches, many of which nowadays welcome visitors. Along the Atlantic coast are a string of beach resorts, mostly catering for Latin American tourists.

Where to go when - our guide to The Pampas
The weather in The Pampas is wide and varied
Stretching south and west from Buenos Aires are the yawning plains and fertile soils of the pampas. The climate here varies by season: the summer (December - February) is hot, humid and prone to tropical showers, while the winter months (June - August) are cool, dry and often cloudy. Spring and autumn are ideal times to visit, with sunny, warm days and colourful foliage. The annual Dia de la Tradición in San Antonio de Areco offers a full week of gaucho-related activities, including exhibitions of cowboy skills, dancing and succulent barbecues.
