Key Takeaways
- The Hero of Ferelden is voted the best Dragon Age protagonist with a 2,000-point lead.
- The Inquisitor from Dragon Age: Inquisition is last with less than half the votes.
- Despite this, the Hero of Ferelden has never appeared in a game outside of Dragon Age: Origins.
Dragon Age fans vote for the Hero of Ferelden as the best protagonist in the series. The Dragon Age: Origins player character has a comfortable lead over the other two protags, securing around 2,000 more points than the Champion of Kirkwall, who is in second place.
This leaves the Inquisitor from Dragon Age: Inquisition in last place, with less than half of the votes of the Hero of Ferelden. This suggests that, even with the game being more dated than the other entries, fans still love how Dragon Age: Origins handled its protagonist, giving players detailed backstories depending on race and class.
Dragon Age Fans Still Love Their Wardens
The poll, put together by Reddit user BelovedDesperado, has only been up for a little over a day, but has already pulled in more than 6,000 votes. With this in mind, it's safe to say that this is pretty reflective of the Hero of Ferelden's enduring popularity, 15 years since we last saw them in a game.
It might be that very mystique that makes them so popular. Because they're the only unvoiced protagonist, they've only appeared in the first game. On the other hand, the Champion of Kirkwall - Hawke - showed up in Inquisition, and the Inquisitor is set to appear in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The Hero of Ferelden has been mentioned from Dragon Age 2 onwards, but alas, it's unlikely we'll see them again.
Another poll from the same user listed Alistair as the most popular Warrior companion, which is the correct opinion.
As for Hawke's popularity, that isn't too surprising. Players have the least control over their character - they always have to be a human who lived in Lothering - but that did allow BioWare to dive into their background quite extensively, giving fans a lot to explore in Dragon Age 2. They can also be incredibly sarcastic, something the Inquisitor doesn't get to do all that often.
We'll have to wait and see where Rook fits into all of this when Dragon Age: The Veilguard launches later this year. Rook will be the latest protagonist, and much like the Inquisitor, can be a human, elf, dwarf, or qunari. There are also separate backgrounds to choose from, which could be reminiscent of how Origins handled character creation.
