Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) offer so much more than a degree to those who attend these institutions of higher learning. Many graduates from schools such as Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama reveal that their reasons for choosing their HBCU and what they actually discovered about themselves and their culture had so much more meaning than the degree they earned. With so many choices of learning institutions today, here are some reasons to choose a nursing program at a Historically Black College or University:

Learn More About Diversity Within the Black Culture

Many HBCU graduates initially sought a Black college in order to be amongst a similar population. However, what many realized and learned to appreciate at their HBCU was a true sense of diversity within the Black community itself and that being African-American is not about one culture, it is about appreciating and celebrating the abundance of cultures within the Black population.

One student from North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, North Carolina stated that attending an HBCU was like "living Black History Month every day." From fellow students to professors, the accomplishments of African-Americans in U.S. history and worldwide are featured, studied, and emulated in daily conversations and coursework.

Celebrate Black Empowerment

Students at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia are taught the power of self-empowerment as it relates to being Black in today's society. Having the ability and foresight to encourage and support one another to be bold and take risks in one's life and career is inspiring and energizing for students and graduates.

Obtain an Excellent Education

Many HBCUs offer nursing programs that are among the top-rated schools in the nation. For example, Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, North Carolina is among the top HBCUs in the United States. Their nursing program is listed as having a 97.83% NCLEX-RN pass rate for first-time test-takers, which is over 5% higher than the state average of 92.6 in 2019.

Prospective nursing students have many choices when considering accredited programs. Attending an HBCU can be an excellent choice for many students to gain unique and memorable college experiences.
