While it's never explained by the writers, grog was typically a drink made from 50% water and 50% rum. This was likely how the Captains stretched the limited supplies of alcohol brought on the Expedition.

Before rum, sailors would cut their putrid water with beer or wine to improve the flavor. And because, you know, alcohol kills germs. With these two nowhere to be found on the island, Penn replaced the sailor's rations with rum. It was damn strong, which meant it didn't spoil - another bonus.

While many claim to make a traditional navy grog recipe, there are several accepted forms. The Royal Navy's grog recipe includes water, dark rum, lemon juice, and cinnamon. A commonly found recipe in the Caribbean includes water, light rum, grapefruit juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, cinnamon, and honey.

Kava, otherwise known as yaqona, or quite simply, grog, is the traditional national drink of Fiji. It is a mildly narcotic and sedative drink made from the crushed root of the yaqona (pronounced yang-GO-na) strained with water. It is served in a large communal bowl as part of the traditional kava ceremony.

A Brief History of the Rum Ration

This was especially true on long voyages at sea, when water supplies could turn rancid (or run out). A gallon of beer was the original rationed drink for sailors, but it too could spoil easily at sea. Around 1655, many ships switched over to rum rations instead.

Brandy, wine, and beer remained the normal ration for the rest of the world but, as the presence of the British Navy continued to grow in the Colonies and West Indies, rum was essential to those sailing in the New World.

During this period, the pirates would take long voyages, and the ships' casks that held their water began to grow algae, spoiling their drinking water quickly. This is where rum came into play. By adding rum into the casks, it would act as a preservative and prevent things such as slime from overgrowing in the water.

Legal Status of Kava in the United States

At the federal level, kava is not classified as a controlled substance, meaning it is kava legal in the US for general consumption. However, several states have implemented restrictions or bans on its use due to potential health concerns and regulatory issues.

Kava, called yaqona in Fijian, is a beverage made from the dried and crushed roots and stems of a pepper shrub, Piper methysticum. Cultivated and drunk throughout much of the southwestern Pacific, kava is the most copiously drunk social beverage in Fiji.

It is common to find that Christians drink kava as part of their cultural heritage, especially in places where it is a traditional beverage.

Steps. Add the dark rum, gold demerara rum, white rum, honey syrup, club soda, grapefruit juice and lime juice to a shaker filled with crushed ice and shake until well-chilled (about 30 seconds). Strain into a chilled rocks glass with fresh crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and lime wheel.
