I have seen a few crochet star tutorials and patterns around on the internet and they are all fantastic. This This is a description on how I like to do my crochet star – which is based on the traditional Granny Square.

This granny star is so easy to crochet and yet is so pleasing on the eye. You can make this as big or as small as you like, by adding more or less rounds.

For my granny star I wanted to use up some of my leftovers. I used Stylecraft Special DK in colours: Pomegranate, Lemon, Wisteria, Turquoise, Blush, and Sherbert. You can purchase this yarn here.

I used a 3.5mm hook, but this personal preference.

You can use whatever yarn you prefer.

Abbreviations/Stitch Guide

This pattern is written in UK terms.

tr –treble crochet: yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through loop (three loops on hook), yarn over pull through two loops (two loops on hook), yarn over pull through two remaining loops.

ch –chain

ss –slip stitch

treble clusters – this refers to the group of three treble crochet stitches (this is what this pattern is based on)

Gauge

I used a 3.5mm hook with Stylecraft Special DK. Approximate gauge 4 rounds=10cm (4 inches). Gauge is not important for this pattern, just keep going until you have done as many or as few rounds as you like.

Notes about the granny star

There are many tutorials and videos available to make a granny star. This is how I make my granny stars. I hope you find it useful. I do not work any chains between the treble clusters (this is a group of three treble crochet stitches), except at the corners (points of the star), where I work 1 chain.

Similar to when I make granny squares, I flip the star over after each round. I also join the new colour in a different corner (point) each time.

Pattern

Start: To start ch4, ss into first chain to form a loop (or you could make a magic circle instead).

Round 1: ch3 (counts as 1 tr) 2 tr into the ring, *ch1 3tr*, repeat *to* twice more, ch1 then ss into the top of the starting chain 3. Fasten off yarn.

Round 2: Turn over. Attach new yarn in any chain 1 space, ch3 (counts as 1 tr) 2 tr into the same space, *[3tr ch1 3 tr] in the next space*, repeat *to* twice more, 3tr in the space that you started, ch1 ss into top of starting chain 3. Fasten off.

Round 3: Turn over. Attach new yarn in any chain 1 corner space, ch3 (counts as 1 tr) 2tr into same space, [3tr ch1 3tr] into the space between two treble clusters from the row below, continue to work [3tr ch1 3tr] in each space (see photo) until you reach the starting corner, work 3tr ch1 ss into top of starting chain 3. Fasten off.

In effect you have now formed your 8 points of your star when working this round.

In this round you will have added to your 8 points.

Round 7: Turn over. Attach new colour into any corner (point) space. Ch3 (counts as 1 tr) 2tr into same space. 3tr in each space along until you get to the middle space (indicated by my needle in the photo), skip this space and then continue working along with 3tr in each space to the corner (point). Work [3tr ch1 3tr] in the point. Continue all the way round working 3tr in each space between trebles skipping the middle space, and [3tr ch1 3 tr] in each of the points. When you arrive back at the starting point 3 tr, ch1, ss into top of starting chain 3. Fasten off.
