If you're a frequent user of Google's Pay or Wallet features, you'll know that it's a fast and convenient way to manage your finances and payments right from your smartphone. However, what you might not know is whether GPay supports international payments or, more specifically, whether you can send money to Japan using the app.
The answer is yes, you can send money to Japan with GPay, but only from the United States. That's because Google Pay's integration with Wise and Western Union is only available to American users. If you're from a different country or want to make sure you're finding the best deal, then run a search on our free comparison engine to find the best money transfer provider to Japan in real time. 👇

Does GPay Support International Transfers?
Yes, GPay does support international money transfers, but only from the United States to other countries overseas. This is the case even though Google Pay is also available in India and Singapore, and Google Wallet is available in dozens of other countries worldwide.
Sending money internationally from the US with Google Pay is facilitated by Western Union (to around 200 countries and territories) and Wise (an expert in low-cost bank transfers to around 80 countries). You'll be able to set up your transfer directly from your Google Pay account in the app, but you'll be prompted to set up an account with Wise or Western Union and link it to your GPay account — all of which you can do right from your GPay app. You'll then be able to send your transfer, which should typically arrive within one or two business days (depending on the country you're sending to). Moreover, the fees and exchange rates should be quite reasonable in most cases.
Sadly, if you're from any other country outside of the United States, you won't be able to use Google Pay to send money abroad. Instead, you'll need to use a different provider to complete the job (which we discuss this in the next section).
Best Money Transfer Deals to Japan
In the end, whether or not Google Pay works for international transfers in your country, it's always a good idea to compare the market to make sure you're finding fair fees and excellent exchange rates when converting currency to Japanese yens. After all, although the GPay app is convenient, signing up for an online money transfer provider normally offers the same level of convenience but with consistently low costs — regardless of whether you're transferring to Japan or any other country worldwide.
For example, according to thousands of search results on Monito in 2023, the best deal on average to Japan from all other countries around the world was Wise, which scored well overall according to our Monito Score:
9.5
However, although it was most often the cheapest on average, Wise wasn't always the best deal, and for money transfers from some countries Japan, it was either badly priced or even unavailable at all. That's why it's always a good idea to compare money transfer providers for your individual transfer amount and preferred payment method beforehand.
To do this, just run a quick search for free on our real time comparison engine below. Within just a few clicks, you'll be able to pick a provider you like and get started with your transfer to save time, money, and hassle compared to the bank!

FAQ About GPay to Japan
Are Google Pay and Google Wallet the same?
No, Google Pay and Google Wallet aren't the same thing. Google Wallet is an app you can use to store card information and facilitate peer-to-peer payments, while Google Pay lets you make transfers and contactless payments in-store and online. However, because Google is constantly developing and testing these products, in some countries, Google Pay and Google Wallet are integrated into one app, while in others, they're still used separately. It's for this reason that we recommend checking the official Google website for the most reliable and updated information.
Can Google Pay be used internationally?
Yes, Google Pay can be used internationally if you have a working debit or credit card added to your GPay account and the foreign payment terminal accepts contactless payments. Moreover, GPay can also be used to make international transfers, but only from the United States through its integration with Wise and Western Union.
Does Google Pay work in Canada?
No, Google Pay doesn't work in Canada, but you can use Google Wallet in Canada to make contactless payments and store cards, tickets, and public transport passes.
Does Google Pay work in Nigeria?
No, Google Pay doesn't work in Nigeria.
Does Google Pay work in India?
Yes, Google Pay does work in India.
Is Google Pay accepted everywhere?
No, GPay payments are certainly not accepted everywhere. In order to pay with Google Pay, the payment terminal needs to be ready to accept contactless payments. This form of payment isn't ubiquitous around the world, especially in countries where cash use is still preferred.
