The gilded altar is the best altar which can be built in the chapel of a player-owned house. It requires level 75 Construction to build and uses 2 marble blocks, 2 bolts of cloth and 4 gold leaves to build. The total cost to buy all the materials for the altar is 1,214,578 coins, or 1,171,300 coins if purchased from the stonemason and the Construction supplies shop.
Prayer cape can substitute for the first age cape if owned, while also providing both gilded altar burners being always lit.
It is possible to boost to build a gilded altar from as low as level 65 Construction by using a crystal saw (+3 boost to level), a sculpting chisel (+1), and orange spicy stew with three doses of Orange spice (+6). However this is difficult to achieve due to the random (-6/+6) boost that the orange spicy stew provides. At level 68 Construction, the altar can be built by using the boosts from the crystal saw, the sculpting chisel and a player-owned house cup of tea, obtained from teak shelves 2 (+3), granting an overall +7 level boost.

Benefits[edit | edit source]
Gilded altars provide 150% extra Prayer experience for all remains offered. Each incense burner lit with a clean marrentill provides further 50% extra experience for a maximum of 250% extra experience per offering, resulting in 350% total experience per offering: 100% base experience plus 250% extra experience. Incense burners remain lit for at least 2 minutes and 10 seconds before depleting, but may last longer. These bonuses make gilded altars a popular choice for Prayer training. Chaos Temple (Wilderness), Powder of burials, and tier 3 Chapel (Fort Forinthry) also offer the same extra experience with their own advantages and disadvantages.
Once the altar has been created, anybody who visits the house, whether they be the homeowner or a guest, has access to the altar and the bonus experience. Players open up their houses to those wishing to train their Prayer efficiently, situating the chapel to be next to the exit portal with a Quest Hall containing a mounted amulet of glory nearby so players can teleport to Al Kharid for quick banking. Ironmen cannot interact with another player's altar though.
Players advertise their open altars on the official RuneScape forums. World 31 is the official world for open gilded altars. Open gilded altars are most commonly found at Taverley due to the close proximity of the Taverley lodestone to the house portal and lack of quest requirements.
During Double XP Weekends, altars only give their usual experiences, and do not benefit from additional experience boosting sources such as bonus experience or experience-boosting sets. It is generally considered a waste of time to use altars during this period due to worse than usual experience rates and the boosted experience rates in other skills.
Players who have their premier artefact 10% XP boost activated while offering bones on their gilded altar, might encounter a situation when they do not benefit from any other boost type (like using up existing bonus XP or using the boost from a pulse core). This might be a bug and can be overcome by deactivating the premier artefact XP boost.

- Notes
- It is assumed that two oak, mahogany or marble incense burners are lit while using the gilded altar (or that a Prayer cape is used).
- The costs only include the cost of bones. The cost of clean marrentills used with the burners is not calculated.
