Germany is expected to completely fill its gas storage by the 2024/2025 winter, according to storage system association INES. Gas levels remain sufficient and the association doesn’t expect to use much more gas in the rest of the current winter. “In the event of normal to cold temperatures, regular injections could begin at the end of March,” said the association in a press release. “Complete refilling of the gas storage facilities before the coming winter of 2024/2025 is possible regardless of the assumed temperatures [for the rest of the current winter].”
Following the halt of gas deliveries from Russia in 2022 in the aftermath of the country’s invasion of Ukraine, Germany scrambled to find alternative sources to avoid a gas shortage in winter, when demand for heating is highest. The countryset strict targets for storage filling levelsat certain dates throughout a year. German gas storage facilities continued to fill up even after the start of the heating season in October 2023, with facilities contain more gas than ever before.
