De raming van de kwantitatieve reële waarde is gebaseerd op een statistisch model afkomstig van het analistenteam van Morningstar gespecialiseerd in de raming van de kwantitatieve reële waarde van bedrijven, en omvat een financiële prognose van het bedrijf. De Morningstar Medalist Rating is de samenvattende weergave van Morningstar’s vooruitkijkende analyse van beleggingsstrategieën zoals die worden aangeboden via specifieke instrumenten met een beoordelingsschaal van Gold, Silver, Bronze, Neutral en Negative. De Medalist Ratings geven aan welke beleggingen naar het oordeel van Morningstar waarschijnlijk in staat zijn om in de loop van de tijd een relevante index of peer group gemiddelde te verslaan op voor risico aangepaste basis. Beleggingsproducten worden beoordeeld op drie belangrijke pijlers (People, Parent en Process) die, als ze gekoppeld worden aan de beoordeling van kosten, de basis vormen voor Morningstar’s overtuiging op de verdiensten van die producten en die hun Medalist Rating bepalen. De pijler ratings kennen de gradaties Low, Below Average, Average, Above Average en High. Pijlers kunnen beoordeeld worden via de kwalitatieve beoordeling van een analist (ofwel direct aan een instrument dat de analist volgt, ofwel indirect als de pijler ratings van een gevolgd instrument toegepast worden op een verwant niet-gevolgd instrument), of via het gebruik van algoritmische technieken. Instrumenten worden aan de hand van hun verwachte prestatie gesorteerd in rating groepen die worden gedefinieerd door hun Morningstar Categorie en hun actieve of passieve status. Als analisten een instrument direct volgen, kennen ze de drie pijler ratings toe op basis van hun kwalitatieve beoordeling, getoetst door het Analyst Rating Committee, en monitoren en evalueren deze ten minste iedere 14 maanden.
