What is the primary objective of the Scholastic Aptitude Test SAT? ›

The purpose of the SAT is to measure a high school student's readiness for college, and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants.

What's on the SAT? The SAT includes a reading and writing test and a math test. There are a total of 98 questions on the SAT, most of which are multiple-choice questions, and you are given 134 minutes to finish the test.

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) contains three areas: critical reading, mathematics, and writing.

The College Board states that the SAT is intended to measure literacy, numeracy and writing skills that are needed for academic success in college. They state that the SAT assesses how well the test-takers analyze and solve problems—skills they learned in school that they will need in college.

SAT consists of three major sections: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. Each section receives a score on the scale of 200–800.

It is designed to test a student's mathematical aptitude, reading comprehension, essay writing ability, and knowledge of basic high school level grammar concepts. Most American colleges and universities require students to submit SAT or ACT scores with their admission applications.
