France’s trade deficit narrowed to €6.1 billion in June 2024, compared to May’s downwardly revised €7.7 billion and market forecasts of €7.5 billion. It was the smallest trade deficit in three months, as exports rose 3.4% month-over-month to €51.7 billion, while imports fell 0.2% to €57.8 billion. At the same time, the energy shortfall fell to €5.3 billion compared to €5.5 billion in the prior month. The trade surplus for consumer goods increased €0.2 billion from €0.1 billion, while the deficit for intermediate goods rose by €0.2 billion to €2.2 billion. Considering the April to June period, the trade deficit widened to $26.4 billion from €23.3 billion in the previous quarter.

France Trade Deficit Largest in 7 Months
France’s trade deficit widened to €8 billion in May 2024 from a downwardly revised €7.5 billion in the previous month and above market forecasts of €7.2 billion. This marked the largest trade gap since October 2023, as exports dropped 1.8% month-over-month to €50.2 billion while imports fell at a softer 0.7% to €58.2 billion. Meanwhile, the energy shortfall decreased to €5.5 billion compared to a downwardly revised €6 billion in the preceding month. In the manufacturing sector, the trade gap for intermediate goods fell by €0.1 billion, reaching €2 billion, while the deficit for investments goods declined by €0.3 billion, standing at €2.1 billion. Moreover, the balance of consumer goods fell for the fourth straight month albeit remained in surplus at €0.1 billion.
