How does Fido roaming work? ›

You will be charged for every calendar day (based on ET) that you use your device to make or receive a call, send a text message or use data while abroad. You'll pay for up to 20 calendar days per billing cycle only, per zone. Want to keep roaming after that? No problem, it's on us for the rest of your billing cycle.

The Fido Roam charge incurs when devices use Fido Services abroad. In general, most one-time verification text messages should be SMS. Receiving SMS would not incur the roaming charge.

Most Fido postpaid plans are automatically enrolled in Fido Roam, though not available with postpaid Basic plans and prepaid plans. If you want to check, text ROAM to 222 to confirm. Data roaming is the use of cellular data services on a mobile device outside of the coverage area of the home network. This can result in additional charges from your mobile service provider, which can vary depending on the destination and the type of data usage.

No device regardless of what network will work unless roaming is enabled on the account as this option allows your device to connect to a foreign network. This might be on by default or off by default as it is with EE because roaming can lead to unexpected charges so you make the decision being aware of that.

Instead, you're accessing the internet through whichever broadband connection the WiFi network uses. This means, even if you're overseas and you connect to a WiFi network, you won't be incurring roaming charges from your mobile service provider.

Turn off data roaming

Turning off data roaming on your phone prevents it from connecting to other cellular networks. You won't be able to browse the Internet unless you connect to a Wi-Fi network, but you'll still be able to call and text.

Airplane mode is one of the safest settings you can choose to avoid roaming charges. You can set your phone to airplane mode before arriving at your destination and keep it there while traveling abroad so that your phone doesn't use data.

With Fido Roam, you can use your plan and wireless number the same way you would at home, while travelling. You'll have access to the available data, airtime and text, picture and video messages included in your plan like you normally would.

If you would like to opt-out of Fido Roam, you would need to contact customer service. In addition, they can also be contacted via Live Chat, Facebook, or Twitter.

When someone calls you on your mobile, the call will usually be routed to your home country and your home operator. Your home operator knows where you are roaming, and will then forward the call to the operator whose network you are using in the visited country. The visited network will then connect the call to you.
