How do I send withdrawn banknotes and coins by post?

You should contact your local postal service to enquire about the appropriate way to send money by post from your location. Sending banknote(s) by post is at your own risk. So please take reasonable measures to insure against loss or theft.

When sending money, please enclose the following information:

- full name

- the case number, which you will receive by e-mail after completing the exchange form online

- copies of your photo ID (mandatory for any exchange above NOK 1 000). A certified ID copy is required when the amount is from NOK 8 000 and above.

Norges Bank will transfer the amount to your account when we receive your exchange form and the banknote(s).

You should contact your local postal service to enquire about the appropriate way to send money by post from abroad. Sending banknote(s) by post is at your own risk. So please take reasonable measures to insure against loss or theft.

You must include the Proforma/Custom Invoice in the letter/parcel - along with your full name and the case number you will receive by e-mail after completing the exchange form online. Please submit the paper form if you didn't use the electronic exchange form. You must also include copies of your photo ID (mandatory for any exchange above NOK 1 000).A certified ID copy is required when the amount is from NOK 8 000 and above. Alternatively, you can confirm your identity via a passport reader app (Please contact us by e-mail: [email protected] for further instructions).

I don`t have an electronic ID (BankID). Can I still make the exchange?

Yes. If you are not a BankID user, you have three options to confirm your identity:

1. You must send a certified photocopy of your identity (mandatory for amounts from NOK 8 000 and above). For amounts less than NOK 8 000, an ordinary photocopy of your ID is sufficient.

2. If you are exchanging money over the counter, you can bring your photo ID, and our staff will make a copy.

3. You can confirm your identity via a passport reader app (please contact us by e-mail: [email protected] for further instructions).

What is a certified copy of identity, and how do I obtain it?

A certified photocopy of identity is a true copy of the original with a certification stamp. It is usually signed and dated by a notary public or an authorised professional, like a lawyer.

In Norway, you can have your ID certified by banks, finance companies, mortgage companies, investment firms, investment management companies, real estate agents, auditors, accountants and lawyers.

We accept the following identity:

- Valid passport (Norwegian and foreign)

- National identity card (Norwegian and European)

- Valid bank card with photo

- Valid driving licence (Norwegian and European)

Can I come to Norges Bank in person and deliver the banknotes and coins?

You can only deliver the banknote(s) and coin(s) at Norges Bank in Oslo and have the amount transferred to your account. Please complete the online electronic exchange form beforehand, and bring your valid photo ID and the case number you will receive by e-mail when completing the electronic exchange form. If you didn't use the electronic exchange form, please fill in the paper form and bring it with you.

Do I need an appointment to deliver or exchange the money over the counter?

No appointment is needed.

Can I have withdrawn banknotes and coins redeemed in cash?

You can only exchange withdrawn banknote(s) for new banknote(s) up to NOK 7 000 over the counter (no coins). Complete the electronic exchange form and bring the banknote(s) and photo ID to one of our counters in Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsø - Monday to Friday from 9 am - 3 pm CET. Drop-in.

You cannot divide the money and exchange in several rounds over the counter in order to remain below the limit if you have a larger amount. You must deliver or send all amountsabove NOK 7 000, including coins, to Norges Bank in Oslo. We will transfer the redemption amount to your account.

Can I receive banknotes that are legal tender by post?

No. We do not send physical banknote(s) and coin(s) by post.

Can I receive the money in my foreign bank account?

Yes. Please note that we can only pay to accounts that accept Norwegian krone (NOK) payments. Your bank will convert the amount into the currency your account is denominated in. We do not charge for this service; however, your bank or its intermediaries may charge you.

When filling out the exchange form, please state the international bank account number IBAN and SWIFT-code (BIC) to ensure that the amount is transferred correctly. The applicant's name and the name of the account holder must match. Otherwise, the payment may be rejected.

Is there a time limit for exchanging withdrawn banknotes and coins?

We are currently not operating with time limits: Norges Bank exchanges banknotes and coins at face value. Older denominations may have collector's value. A coin dealer will be able to advise you.

Can I exchange foreign currency?

No. We do not exchange foreign currency. Your bank or a bureau de change will be able to advise you.

Can I exchange withdrawn banknotes and coins on behalf of someone else?

If you exchange money on behalf of someone else, you need to provide signed confirmation from the owner of the cash, naming you as agent and how the owner would like to receive the money. A certified photocopy of your ID and that of the owner of the banknotes is required.

Can I redeem coins?

The following withdrawn coins can be exchanged at Norges Bank Oslo:

50-øre coin 1996-2011

5-krone coins (1963-97) and 10-krone coins (1983-91)

You must deliver or send the coins to Norges Bank in Oslo. Please include and write your full name, a photocopy of your ID and the case number in the letter/parcel. Please submit the paper form if you didn't use the electronic exchange form. If you represent a company, you must provide the company certification. We will transfer the amount to your account.

Can I get compensation for damaged banknotes and coins?

You can apply for compensation.

General terms and conditions for compensation

Norges Bank may compensate for damaged notes and coins based on their nominal value if the Bank has no reason to suspect that they are counterfeit, and in the Bank’s judgement, there is no reason to suspect that they are connected to criminal acts.

No compensation will be paid for notes and coins that are damaged in a grossly negligent or deliberate manner, including dyed or chemically treated.

Compensation for damaged notes that are not whole

We will compensate for damaged notes that are torn or cut by the following rules:

More than 55% of notes intact: compensated for at a nominal value

50 – 55% of notes intact: compensated for at half the nominal value

Less than 50% of notes intact: no compensation paid

Compensation for a damaged note that consists of several parts will only be paid if the parts can be shown to originate from the same note.

You must deliver or send the damaged banknote(s) and coin(s) to Norges Bank in Oslo. Please include the application form for compensation for damaged banknotes and coins and a certified copy of your ID in the letter/parcel. If you present a company, you must provide a copy of the company certification. We will transfer the amount to your account.

How do I know that Norges Bank has received my banknotes and coins?

You will receive a confirmation by e-mail when we have opened your letter/parcel, stating the case processing time and the total amount we have received.

Norges Bank receives a lot of mail every day. It may take some time before we open all letters.

How long is the exchange processing time for transferring the amount to my account?

Amounts up to NOK 7,000 - processing time is normally under 3 weeks.
Amounts over NOK 7,000 - processing time is normally 8-10 weeks.
Amounts over NOK 40,000 - processing time is normally 10-16 weeks.

You will receive a confirmation by e-mail when we have opened your mail with information about the processing time and the total amount we have counted.

You will also receive a confirmation by e-mail when the money has been transferred to your account.

Why does Norges Bank request additional and supplemental information for the exchange?

Norges Bank reserves the right to request additional information under the Anti-Money Laundering Act or other relevant legislation. Further information may be needed to document the origin of the money. If you failed to upload the appropriate documentation while filling out the electronic exchange form, you may resubmit the documentation by e-mail to [email protected], stating your case number and name.

Adequate documentation will reduce the exchange processing time.

Is a fee charged for exchanging withdrawn banknotes and coins?

No fee is charged for the exchange process.

How do I contact Norges Bank?

Many people contact us to ask if we have received their postal shipments. Norges Bank receives a lot of mail every day. It may take some time before we open all the letters. It usually takes 2-3 weeks before we transfer the amount to your account. Exchanges with large amounts may take longer.

Remember that the actual transit time for shipments also takes time.

If you stated an e-mail address when filling in the form, you will receive a confirmation by e-mail when we have opened your letter/parcel, stating the case processing time and the total amount we have received.
