EVGA FAQ - What's the priority for the output ports on my EVGA graphics card (or Why is my BIOS showing on the wrong monitor)? (2024)

The majority of our graphics cards have several display outputs available for use. When configuring their system, many people like to make sure that the BIOS boots up on a specific monitor and/or want to make sure their monitors are connected in the correct order. This can often simplify configuration in Windows.

Generally speaking, the port priority on the cards is set by firmware and cannot be modified by the end-user. Moreover, this port priority may change, depending on whether your motherboard is configured to run in UEFI or Legacy mode. Where possible, we indicate the priority order below.

For the RTX 30 Series cards, each card features three (3) DisplayPorts and one (1) HDMI. The port priority is the same regardless of whether the motherboard is set to UEFI or Legacy mode.

The port priority (when your card is installed horizontally in your case) is as follows:

  1. DisplayPort (right)
  2. DisplayPort (middle)
  3. DisplayPort (left)
  4. HDMI

EVGA FAQ - What's the priority for the output ports on my EVGA graphics card (or Why is my BIOS showing on the wrong monitor)? (5)

Some older graphics card may have only four display outputs. Those cards would have two (2) DVI, one (1) HDMI, and one (1) DisplayPort. The port priority for those cards would be as follows:

  1. DVI-I
  2. DVI-D
  3. HDMI
  4. DisplayPort

Monitor initialization can also be affected by the monitor's EDID, which will affect this order accordingly regardless of your GPU port priority.

In general, the port priority is as follows: DVI. HDMI. Display Port (middle)

Which port to use on a GPU? ›

DisplayPort generally has a slight edge in supporting higher resolutions and refresh rates compared to HDMI. If you are working with a high-resolution monitor and need to utilize a higher refresh rate, DisplayPort might be a better choice.

Why does Nvidia stop working with EVGA? ›

Stemming from a disagreement with NVIDIA's business practice, EVGA won't offer NVIDIA's next-gen series of graphics boards and will ultimately cut ties with the company. Who is EVGA and how did they work with NVIDIA?

What are the ports behind graphics card? ›

The DVI port most often seen on graphics cards is the DVI-I port, which, direct connection to LCD DVI port aside, will support a DVI to D-Sub converter in order to provide analog output. The DVI-D port is rather rare, but can still be found on a few video cards. DVI-A ports are almost non-existent on video cards.

Which DisplayPort to use? ›

DisplayPort 1.4 and DisplayPort 1.2 are some of the most useful connectors for bringing together desktop computers and high-end monitors. They're two generations of the same connector type, with DisplayPort 1.4 being the more capable, and in 2023, the more popular choice.

Which slot to put my GPU in? ›

The top slot on your motherboard will typically be the best place to mount your graphics card, as this is most often the slot that runs at the full 16x speed (with the full x16 lanes), but to make sure, it's worth checking your motherboard's manual.

What port do I plug my GPU into? ›

The first thing you need to know is that a graphics card uses a PCIe cable to draw power from the power supply. A standard PCIe cable has six pins, with a secondary detachable 2-pin connector to form an eight-pin (6+2 pin) connector.

Is EVGA no longer Nvidia partner? ›

Pretty massive news, given that EVGA has been the golden standard for NVidia's GPU's over the years. I haven't seen full details yet but they're citing “disrespectful treatment” as the main driving factor in why they've made this decision.

What is going on with EVGA? ›

EVGA has had new products since the announcement that they were stopping the sale of NVIDIA graphics cards. Companies can make money off of just PSU and CLC to stay around for a long time in the market place if they make a good quality product that they stand behind.

How did Nvidia mistreat EVGA? ›

The company claims that Nvidia wouldn't tell EVGA how much it would have to pay to obtain GPU cores before publicly announcing the price of cards like the RTX 3080, which made it difficult for EVGA to figure out how much it would have to charge for its own products, built around Nvidia's tech.

Should DisplayPort be on GPU or motherboard? ›

This varies based on which system you have, but in general, you'll want to be sure you are plugging your monitor into the actual GPU and not the integrated video port on the motherboard.

What is Nvidia DisplayPort? ›

DisplayPort (DP) is a proprietary digital display interface developed by a consortium of PC and chip manufacturers and standardized by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). It is primarily used to connect a video source to a display device such as a computer monitor.

What is the name of the power port on a graphics card? ›

What is the best port for graphics? ›

DisplayPort offers significantly more bandwidth than older standards like VGA, DVI, and HDMI. This means it can handle higher resolutions and refresh rates, which is ideal for gaming and other intensive tasks. DisplayPort 1.4, the latest version, supports up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at 120Hz.

Which power supply slot for GPU? ›

The general rule is that your graphics card should fit into the PCI-E slot with the highest bandwidth available on your motherboard, usually a x16 slot. However, some graphics cards may work with lower bandwidth slots, such as x8 or x4, but they may suffer from reduced performance.
