Everything you need to know about the dry run of the cashless toll collection system (2024)

TheToll Regulatory Board (TRB) has announced that a two-month dry run of the cashless toll collection system begins onSeptember 1, 2023. This revives the previous attempts of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to shift to make toll collection completely cashless and contactless as a health and safety measure.

Now, the scheme is being re-implemented tospeed up traffic flow at toll plazas and provide greater convenience to motorists. As before, however, people have many questions about the dry run: Is it happening at all toll plazas along all expressways? What if I don’t have time to get an RFID installed before my planned travel? Which RFID sticker is used on which tollway again?

Everything you need to know about the dry run of the cashless toll collection system (1)

What if I try to pass through a participating toll plaza without an RFID sticker?

Everything you need to know about the dry run of the cashless toll collection system (2)

If you arrive at a toll plaza implementing the cashless toll collection scheme and your vehicle does not have an RFID sticker, you will be directed to an area where you can pay for your toll fees in cash, “and shall be persuaded to have an RFID sticker installed.”

We don’t know what how they intend to persuade you, but don’t worry—we doubt toll-booth personnel will be making you the sort of offer you can’t refuse.

How do I pay toll at non-participating toll plazas?

It’s status quo at toll plazas that aren’t part of the cashless toll collection dry run—you can pay for your toll fees via RFID or cash.

The ultimate goal of this exercise is to switch to fully cashless tollways by the end of 2024, so all motorists are encouraged to get RFIDs for both Autosweep and Easytrip tollways.
