Environmental, Social, Governance | Gilead (2024)

We have a long track record of prioritizing corporate responsibility in line with our mission and core values.

We have refined our approach to ESG over time and today are focused on three core pillars:

  • Innovating for Unmet Needs
  • Empowering People and Communities
  • Sustaining Our Shared Planet

Innovating for Unmet Needs

To us, innovation means developing therapies for the world’s most devastating diseases and going beyond the medicine through our partnerships to advance communitywell-being and global health. Our efforts include:

  • Helping address the diverse needs of people impacted by HIV by researching long-acting treatment and prevention options, as well as a cure.
  • Pursuing a functional cure for hepatitis B virus.
  • Meeting the growing demand for cell therapy, with the goal of reaching 25,000+ patients by 2025.
  • Advancing new therapeutic options for cancers with high unmet needs, such as metastatic triple-negative breast cancer that disproportionately impacts Black women.
  • Ensuring that Black, Latino, women, LGBTQ+ and other underrepresented groups participate in our clinical research.
  • Combatting health inequities and other barriers to care, especially those facing historically marginalized communities.

Empowering People and Communities

We are committed to creating an environment where everyone can thrive. We invest in our workforce and in the communities we serve to advance inclusion, equity and bold ideas that can help make the world a better, healthier place. Our priorities include:

  • Delivering on our OneTen Commitment to hire/promote 200 Black Americans without a four-year degree by 2025.
  • Meeting our 2025 representation goal for a more diverse and inclusive workforce by:
    • Increasing Hispanic representation to 15% of our overall U.S. workforce and 3.7% in leadership roles
    • Increasing Black representation to 10% of our overall U.S. workforce and 12% in leadership roles
    • Maintaining female representation at 50% of our overall workforce and increasing representation in leadership roles to 39%
  • Supporting STEM education, social services and sustainability in the communities where we live and work through the Gilead Foundation.
  • Combatting health inequities and other barriers to care with a focus on communities that have been disproportionally impacted by disease through wide-ranging partnerships.

Sustaining Our Shared Planet

We prioritize our environmental responsibilities and have set ambitious goals to continually advance our business practices and ensure a positive impact on our planet for years to come. Spanning four focal areas – Carbon, Water, Waste and Product – our goals include:

  • Achieving net-zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (Carbon)
  • Reducing potable water use at owned facilities by 30% compared to 2019 and achieving water neutrality in water-stressed regions by 2030 (Water)
  • Reducing total solid waste generated by 20% compared to 2019, including elimination of single use plastics (excludes R&D operations) and achieving zero waste to landfill at owned facilities programs by 2030 (Waste)
  • Ensuring 100% of our product packaging used is widely recyclable or reusable, including eliminating all unnecessary plastics, where quality/safety permits by 2025 (Product Stewardship)
  • Increasing secondary and tertiary product package composition to 30% post-consumer recycled plastic content and 70% recycled content paper from sustainably managed forests by 2025 (Product Stewardship)

Corporate Responsibility Committee

Our Corporate Responsibility Committee ensures we adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct and transparency as we continue to deliver value in a sustainable and responsible manner.
