Is GMK better than PBT? ›

GMK and PBT keycaps both have their pros and cons. While the ABS used by GMK comes in more vibrant colors, the feel and softness of the material are downsides. PBT, on the other hand, may have more subdued coloring, but stand the test of time and provide a silky texture throughout their lifecycle.

If you value craftsmanship, diverse color options, and a distinctive tactile experience, GMK keycaps are well worth their hefty price.

Manufactured by Enjoy PBT (ePBT) these keycaps are doubleshot, high quality ABS plastic.

Additionally, PBT is more resistant to degradation caused by UV light. UV being the main cause of vibrant keycaps losing their color over time. This means that PBT keycaps will keep their color, and their pleasing texture for longer.

Generally, PBT is known to be better for long-term use and will not wear or get greasy as much, good for people with hands on the sweatier side. The ABS keycaps, on the other hand, have more vivid color options available and offer a silky, skin-like touch.

General master key (GMK)

A general group key is defined within a General master key system the key with the most authorizations.

Warping is not a problem with the ABS keycaps. Additionally, they won't lead to many flaws. On the other side, the PBT keycaps can warp easily. The colors of ABS keycaps typically stand out more and offer a better typing experience in terms of sound quality.

ABS plastic allows GMK to create a wide variety of keycap sets in what seems like a near limitless amount of colorways. This is important, because the German manufacturer is well-renowned in the keyboard enthusiast community for its ability to fulfill very specific design requests submitted via a "group buy" process.

Cherry GMK is made of ABS and begins as a 6 or 7 on the smooth scale (there's some texture to start with) but ABS will shine over time… Cherry EPBT is made of PBT and is about mid-range, 5. SP SA, ABS version, is almost glossy, with a slightly glazed surface (so a 9 on the smooth scale).

The keys on Apple's modern keyboards all develop a shine over time, starting with the most-used keys. It looks like oil from your skin, but it's not — you can't clean it off. It's erosion of the plastic. Long story short, ABS plastic is more commonly used on keycaps because it's cheaper; PBT plastic is more expensive.
