Pre-K to 1st Grade

Reading Comprehension – Beyond the 5 W’s
2nd to 4th Grade
Do you ever get a blank stare from your child after they are done reading a book? Or maybe you’re afraid that info goes in one ear and out the other? Then this workshop is for you! This workshop will provide insight on how you can help your child connect with what they are reading and give it meaning.
Topics include:
* The importance of building vocabulary
* Strategies for before, during and after reading
* How to ask questions that will encourage a deeper understanding of the text


Literary Themes and Genres – What’s it Saying?
4th to 6th Grade

Your child – an independent reader diving into various books by the minute – chapter books, novels, graphic novels, non-fiction books, magazines, comic strips, manga…and the list goes on.You – thrilled your child is a growing reader, curious to know what these books are saying and perhaps a little bewildered how you’re going to have time to read and talk with your child about all these books…
Designed for parents of upper elementary students, this workshop will provide strategies to quickly assess what type of book your child is reading (literary genre), the main point of the story (literary theme) and how to ask reading comprehension questions that will engage your child in meaningful conversations.

Supporting Middle School Reading Comprehension
6th to 8th Grade
Drawing on a decade of experience as a middle school English Language Arts Teacher, this workshop shows parents of middle school students how they can use conversation and dialogue to validate their child while building up their confidence in reading comprehension.Topics include the importance of building vocabulary,Strategies for guiding comprehension before, during and after reading, and how to ask questions that will encourage a deeper understanding of the text.

This workshop will give you a refresher on the basic “nuts and bolts” of writing so you can help your child with their writing assignments. This workshop will also explain the writing process so you can be better prepared to guide your child.
