X (earlier called Twitter) chief Elon Musk, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates are three tech moguls that need no introduction. All three of them have been immensely successful in their lives and people often look up to them for inspiration. But did you know that the three tech experts share a common habit?
The habit that we are talking about here is reading.

For Bezos, books hold a special significance. To recall, Amazon was founded as an online bookstore in 1995 and is till date one of the best platforms where authors can sell their books. Bezos was also married to novelist Mackenzie Scott. The billionaire also reportedly maintains a lifelong habit of reading, particularly favouring novels, especially science fiction. Bezos has often credited his passion for reading with inspiring the creation of Amazon's online browsing experience, which revolutionised the way people shop for books.
Similarly, Musk's habit of reading began at a young age, with reports suggesting he spent up to ten hours a day immersed in books, even reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica. When asked about the source of his ideas for building rockets, Musk simply replied, "I read books." Musk's biography by Walter Isaacson, that was launched in September last year, also talked about his love for books. One of his favourite books included The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Interestingly, xAI's chatbot GrokAI is also modelled after the book.
Bill Gates, too, is an avid reader, dedicating hours each day to devouring books, particularly science fiction in his youth, before transitioning to non-fiction in adulthood. Gates has often talked about his love for reading. In a LinkedIn post about a year back, the Microsoft co-founder revealed how he was asked if there was some advice that he would give to his younger self. He added that the only advice he'd give is to "read a lot."
"I was recently asked what advice I would give to young people who want to make a positive impact on the world. It made me think a lot about what I would tell my younger self. I remember this guy. A lot has changed since this photo, but I remember how excited I felt for the next chapter. My advice is simple: Read a lot and discover a skill you enjoy. For some, that means being great at science or a great communicator. There’s so much opportunity to do good in the world," Gates' post read.
The importance of reading in shaping success is not lost on other influential figures like Warren Buffett, who once recommended reading "500 pages a day" to those seeking to emulate his achievements.
Thus, the habit of reading has played a pivotal role in shaping the minds and strategies of these highly successful individuals, demonstrating the profound impact of books on personal and professional development.
