Edit my M1 portfolio | M1 Help Center (2024)

At M1 you have complete control of your portfolio and can edit your Slices (stocks, ETFs, Pies) at any time.

When editing your portfolio, you have the power to add, remove, or change the target percentages of Slices.

If this is your first portfolio, you can read a step-by-step guide on building your portfolio.

Keep in mind:

  • You can have a maximum of 100 Slices per portfolio. To increase this limit, please contact us.

  • The total target percentage of Slices must equal 100% before you are able to save changes, and each Slice must have a target percentage of at least 1%.

  • Any buy order must equal a minimum of $1.00 per security before a trade will be executed.

  • M1 Model Portfolios cannot be edited, so you won’t be able to add, remove, or move Slices into or out of them.

  1. Under the Invest tab, select “Portfolio"

  2. Select "Edit"

    • If you’re adding a Slice on mobile, swipe up on the bottom of your screen to access the “Edit” button.

  3. Select the blue "Add Slice" button

  4. Choose any new stock, ETF, or Pie

  5. When you are ready to add your selected Slices to your portfolio, select "Done"

Adjust the target percentages of the Slices in the Pie you are moving Slices to. These allocation changes will occur over time as money flows into your account if Auto-invest is enabled.

Keep in mind, adjusting your target percentages won‘t initiate a full account rebalance, where holdings are bought and sold to match your new target percentages. If you’d like to do that, learn more about rebalancing your portfolio.

Make sure:

  • Each Slice is allocated at least 1%.

  • The target percentages of all the Slices add up to 100%.

You will not be able to save your changes until the total percentage equals 100%.

Keep in mind, you will also not be able to save a Pie with an inactive security. A security may become inactive after a corporate action.

To remove an inactive security:

  1. Navigate to the Portfolio tab

  2. Select "Edit"

    • If you’re removing a Slice on mobile, swipe up on the bottom of your screen to access the “Edit” button.

  3. Navigate to the inactive Slice

  4. Check the box to the left of the Slice

  5. Select “Delete” if on Web or “Remove” if on Mobile

  6. Reallocate the percent of the inactive Slice to other Slice(s) in the Pie

  7. Save

How you choose to remove a Slice from a Pie depends on where you want the proceeds from the Slice to go. You can either delete the Slice or create a manual sell order.

Delete a Slice

  • To delete a Slice, change the target percentage of a Slice to 0%. You'll need to adjust the target percentages of the other Slices in your Pie to equal 100% before saving.

  • The proceeds will automatically reinvested in your Pie. The proceeds will split up, buying into your underweight Slices in efforts to bring them back up to your target percentages.

Create a sell order

  • To create a sell order, select the Slice and create a manual sell order for the entire value of the Slice. Once the sale is complete, you can remove the Slice by changing the percentage to 0%.

  • The proceeds will be added to your account's cash. From there, they will follow your corresponding Auto-invest settings.

To cancel a pending sell, you can add the securities/ Pie back to your portfolio.

To move a Slice or Slices, edit your portfolio on Web. For more information on moving Slices, see this article.

To update your target percentages, use the “+” and “-” tabs and click “Save.”

Keep in mind, adjusting your target percentages won‘t initiate a full account rebalance, where holdings are bought and sold to match your new target percentages. If you’d like to do that, learn more about rebalancing your portfolio.

Auto-invest automatically allocates funds to all the securities you have added to your Pie based on their target percentages.

To help prevent additional funds from being allocated to a specific Slice in your Pie while keeping it in your portfolio, you can set a very low target percentage for that Slice, such as 1%.

If the target percentage of a Slice is 1%, Auto-invest will not allocate additional funds to the Slice unless the actual allocation drops below that percentage (I.e. 1%). Changing the target percentage of a Slice will not initiate any sells, unless it’s completely removed from the portfolio or set to 0%.

To rename your Portfolio on Web:

  1. Navigate to the Invest tab

  2. Select "Edit"

  3. Enter a new Pie name and select "Continue" in the top right corner

  4. Confirm your change

To rename your Portfolio on Mobile:

  1. Navigate to the Invest tab

  2. Swipe up on the bottom of your screen

  3. Select "Edit"

  4. Tap on the current name of your Portfolio

  5. Enter a new Pie name and select "Done"

  6. Tap "Save" in the top right corner

Utilizing the Moving Slices feature may cause trades to take place in other M1 Invest Accounts you use the same Pie in. Please visit our article on Moving Slices when Pies are used in more than one account for further information

Additionally, securities received after a corporate action or account transfer are unable to be moved to a Pie used in several locations in your portfolio or across M1 Invest Accounts.
