Despite its many forms over the decades, lace has never quite managed to shake off its chintzy associations. There’s something quite Miss Havisham about the fabric’s fussy floral finish that some people will always associate with ’80s wedding albums. But, if the runways and street-style galleries are anything to go by, it seems as though the fashion crowd is on board with embracing lace’s kitschy appeal this season – and, as it just so happens, so are we.
2024’s lace trend bears many similarities to 2023’s “naked skirt” – a lace midi-skirt is an easy way to recreate that “barely-there” look, as seen on the spring/summer 2024 runways of Erdem and Carolina Herrera – but there are so many other ways to rep this fanciful fabric that extends beyond underwear-flashing fashion. The lace dress-over-jeans look seems to be a popular option among FROW-ers, typically finished with a sporty bomber and sneakers. Lace is also a great fabric for layering, and we love the idea of slipping a lace cami over a long-sleeved top, ideally in a fun shade, to create that eclectic, multi-textured look.
For a more evening-ready look, meanwhile, a lace shirt will bring a quirky ’70s spin to a pair of tailored trousers, or, if skirts are more your thing, then may we recommend a Rachel Green-inspired black lace pencil skirt, a baby-doll cami top and T-bar heels for a throwback pairing, but with a sophisticated spin. Just don’t forget to scour vintage stores for those OG ’90s pieces.
