Eating healthy on a budget can be hard for anyone, but it’s especially hard for college students who are new to cooking and preparing meals for themselves. Eating healthy during college doesn’t have to be hard or expensive, and it will get easier with experience. The following tips can help when trying to grocery shop without breaking the bank.
Set a food budget
Figuring out how much money you realistically can spend on food each week or month will help you plan your grocery trips better. When setting a budget make sure to take into account eating out as well as grocery shopping. Making your own meals instead of ordering take out is also a great way to save money on food. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for events on campus that offer free food!
This may seem simple, but going to the store with a list can help minimize picking up extra items that don’t fit into your budget. Having the meals planned that you are going to eat each week also cuts down on spending extra time and money in the grocery store. Buy in season
Foods in season are cheaper due to the larger abundance of that food. In season foods are also more nutritionally dense and taste better because they are consumed closer to harvesting time. Eat the Seasons has a list of what foods are in season each month in North America, but you can also tell by what the cheapest items in the produce section of the grocery store are. Shopping at local farmers markets is also a good way to buy what’s in season, ensure that the food is fresh, and support local businesses.
Don’t be afraid of canned or frozen foods
Canned and frozen foods are great to include in your diet because of their convenience and long shelf life. Frozen foods retain the most nutrients since they are frozen soon after harvest, which is the time at which the food contains the most nutrients. You can also freeze foods like bread, fruits, and veggies if you’re not going to get a chance to eat them before they go bad, as well as buy things in bulk, like meat or grains, which typically saves money in the long run.
Skip pricey organic foods
Organic foods are often significantly more expensive than conventional foods, and studies have shown that they don’t have a nutritional advantage over their conventional counterparts. Buying conventional foods over organic is one way to save money on groceries. If buying organic is important to you, consider purchasing through a member owned food co-op, community supported agriculture, or farmer’s market.
Focus on fiber
Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are all relatively inexpensive foods that contain dietary fiber which is beneficial to digestive and overall health. Making foods high in fiber the center of your meals will not only help your health but can save you money at the store.

Some foods are more affordable in a less processed form. For example, a block of cheese is cheaper than shredded cheese, and canned beans are less expensive than refried ones. Whole grains, like brown rice and oats, are also cheaper per serving than most processed cereals.
It's good to eat some most days but remember to make your portion the size of your iPhone, not your iPad. Choose high-fibre foods to fill you up such as fresh fruit, fruit salad, vegetables (frozen are fine), baked beans instead of spaghetti, lentils, porridge, muesli and wholegrain bread instead of white.
The average college student spends $410 eating off campus according to the Education Data Initiative. The average on-campus meal plan costs $450 per month, but the price can vary from state to state. When it comes to spending on groceries, the average college student spends anywhere from $272 – $429 a month.
Having no time to eat: Many students have such busy schedules that they feel they have no time to eat, so they skip meals. This habit can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle.
Other frequently cited barriers are taste [22,24,27,31,[36], [37], [38]] and lack of nutrition knowledge [23,24,26,28,39,40]. Additional barriers include limited availability and lack of access to healthier foods as well as competing priorities and lack of cooking skills [26,27,41].
Results. The prevalence of overweight/obesity was 28.8% (95% CI: 24.0%, 34.0%). The majority ate regular daily meals, but more than half skipped breakfast. Frequent snacking, fried food consumption at least three times per week and low intake of daily fruits and vegetables were common.
Fruit and vegetables - Eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day. Potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and other starchy carbohydrates - Choose wholegrain or higher fibre versions with less added fat, salt and sugar. Oil & spreads - Choose unsaturated oils and use in small amounts.
How can college students afford food? College students can apply for SNAP benefits, but they must work at least 20 hours per week or meet a specific exemption. Shopping at discount grocery stores and using free food pantries helps.
Eat to be "smart" - Include foods that contain iron, B vitamins and Vitamin C. Try lean red meat, spinach, whole grain breads and cereal, eggs, nuts, oranges, apples and carrots. Eat Fruit - Fruit ranks high among the best foods you can eat for your brain.
Try not to ruin your healthy eating plan by giving in to quick snacks like candy bars, chips and other junk foods. If you're hungry in between meals, grab fresh fruits, veggies or nuts. Can't find fresh ones? Get a bunch of dried, unsweetened fruit (make sure it says that on the bag).
