You all know I am a coffee lover. Coffee is delicious. And I have quite a collection of coffee drink recipes. Coffee in the morning, coffee mid-morning, coffee when I am stressed, coffee when I am happy…you get the idea. (okay, in reality, I only end up drinking 1-2 cups a day. I wish I could drink more and actually sleep at night)
During the holiday season, particularly, my entire family takes time out the day to sit down and make a pot of coffee. It’s the perfect way, we think, to finish out a long day or perhaps start the day. A shot of kahlua in a cup of coffee makes for a festive breakfast, don’t you think :).
This fun drink is the Mexican way of smooshing hot chocolate and coffee together into incredible coffee that I’m glad made its way to the United States and my house. And now yours!!
Ingredient List for Mexican Coffee:
- Brewed hot coffee. I just make a pot of coffee with dark coffee grounds, if I have them. If possible, use whole beans and grind them fresh to get the best flavor.
- Brown sugar. Dark brown sugar will have the most authentic flavor but use what you have on hand.
- Chocolate. I prefer to use chopped chocolate bars but chocolate syrup works, as well, if it is what you have on hand. Mexican chocolate is the ingredient choice for traditional mexican coffee but you’ll have to head to a mexican grocery store to grab it. Keep it on hand in the winter for a delicious treat to add to strong coffee (or to snack on).
- Cinnamon sticks. The cinnamon sticks simmer up in the coffee and chocolate for a lovely flavor. These are also the best things to garnish your coffee with, after you pour it up.
- Whipped cream. A bit of whipping cream to top off your coffee makes this taste an awful lot like a decadent hot chocolate.
How to make Mexican Coffee:
- In a small saucepan stir the brewed coffee, cinnamon sticks, brown sugar, and chopped chocolate together.
- On medium-high heat, bring the coffee to a gentle boil, turn the heat down to simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove the cinnamon sticks and add the vanilla.
- Pour into 2 coffee cups and top with a bit of fresh whipping cream.
Tips for making Mexican Coffee:
- Adding tequila and coffee liqueur (like Kahlua) makes this a really good cocktail or after dinner drink!
- Try adding a touch of chili powder or our homemade coffee syrups for a unique & delicious flavor!
- Make this into iced coffee: Strain coffee (sometimes there will be bits of cinnamon and chocolate that don’t chill nicely) into a mason jar, place it into the fridge to cool, serve over ice.
- Orange peel is often added to some of the authentic mexican recipes you find for this coffee. Give it a try! Add a couple orange peels or bit of orange zest into the spices.

There’s still a lot of debate about what the best coffee brewing method is. We think it’s a matter of preference, so we’ve created a pro/con list of several types (french press, traditional brewer, etc.) so you can get a better idea about which method you might prefer for yourself.
If you make this drink, you’ll want something to go with it. We recommend our chocolate cake. It isn’t like every other chocolate cake. We absolutely promise.
Or our uber popular Berry Monkey Bread. Yeah, pick that. That’s a winner and oh so easy to make!
